Dorothy Gazeley

August 11, 1933 - April 7, 2017

Dorothy Gazeley of Camarillo, CA passed away at her home on April 7 surrounded by her closest family members. Her passing was a culmination of the most courageous and extraordinary battle with cancer one could imagine. She was a brave and beautiful warrior to the very end.
Dorothy was born in San Pedro, CA and spent most of her life living in the South Bay until 2008 when she and her husband Robert moved to Camarillo.
Robert and Dorothy were sweethearts from the moment they met in front of the Harbor College library. Their love was deep, enduring, and full of devotion to each other. This May they would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
Dorothy was a talented musician and learned piano at a very young age. She later taught her two daughters to play and taught piano professionally. She returned to college and became a music teacher in the Torrance School District. She would write musicals for her students to perform and that talent transitioned into a successful career as a songwriter. She wrote for artists such as Barbra Streisand, Patti Labelle and even the movie "Runaway Bride."
Dorothy was devoted to spirituality. She practiced daily meditation and prayer and she prayed fiercely for those she loved. She was truly grateful for her family and did not take life for granted.
Those closest to Dorothy describe her as "a ray of sunshine" "brilliant and spiritual" "beautiful inside and out" "the bravest woman I've ever known."
Dorothy is survived by her loving husband Robert, daughter Denice Avila (Percy), daughter Judy Pinkard (Glenn), grandson Keith Pinto (Mette), grandson Bobby, and great grandchildren David, Idun, and Sebastian.
Dorothy's wishes were for her ashes to be spread at sea. Celebration of Life events are pending.
The family wishes to thank all of the family members and friends who have been praying for Dorothy and sending her positive thoughts and affirmations. They definitely enriched and extended her life.
Dorothy's philosophy of life can be summed up in the lyric of a song she wrote for Barbra Streisand:
Just like the seasons
There are reasons for the path we take
There are no mistakes
Just Lessons To Be Learned
