Grace Fumiko Oshita
1925 ~ 2017

Salt Lake City, UT-Grace Fumiko Oshita, 92, passed away on September 20, 2017 at her home in Salt Lake City. She was born on January 2, 1925 in San Francisco to Edward Kanta Fujimoto and Miyako Miyake Fujimoto. World War II forced internment at Topaz Relocation Camp in Delta, Utah with her family including stepmother, Rae Shizue Fujimoto. After the war, the family moved to Salt Lake City where she helped her parents reestablish their miso manufacturing company, Fujimoto & Co. On Sept. 18, 1949, she married Ben Chimato Oshita. They were married for 48 years until his death in 1997.

Grace had a love and talent for Japanese music and culture, playing traditional instruments: koto and samisen; singing; and teaching origami to church, schools and community groups. She was devoted to educating the public about her experiences and explaining the meaning of Japanese-American relocation. Grace was recognized for her work by being named an honorary member of the Board of Directors of the Topaz Museum and was presented a Utah Day of Remembrance Award for her 40 years of sharing her personal story of Topaz. Grace was also an active member of the Salt Lake Buddhist Temple where she was presented a Dana Award for her service. Grace also devoted many years on the Issei Center Board (now Nikkei Center).

One of the highlights of her life was her costarring role in the MGM movie, "Revenge of the Ninja" that was filmed in Salt Lake City.

Grace was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and cousin. We will miss her beautiful smile and lively conversation.

Her family gives special thanks to her home caregivers Patric, Kelli, and Julie, but especially to Vilma, who lovingly cared for Grace for 9 years. We also thank her neighbor, Rene, for 61 years of friendship.

Surviving family include: son, Allen (Anne), Hillsborough, CA; daughter Lynne (Richard) Doi, Salt Lake City; grandchildren Shelley (Chris) Taketa; Jennifer Oshita; Jamie (Tuckett) Slade; Jonathan Oshita; 3 great grandchildren.

Please join us for a Memorial Service on Friday, Oct. 13, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Salt Lake Buddhist Temple, 211 West 100 South, SLC. Family visitation will be held prior to the service from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. at the Temple.
