Dead Moon, Pierced Arrows’ Fred Cole Dead at 69

Fred Cole—the Portland punk mainstay from Dead Moon, Pierced Arrows, and several other bands—has died. Voodoo Doughnut Recordings, a label that has released a few recent Dead Moon records, confirmed the news to Pitchfork. A cause of death has not been revealed, but he was recently hospitalized for “bleeding in his liver,” according to a post on Pierced Arrows’ Facebook. He was 69 years old. Fred Cole’s accomplished career began when he was 16, playing with his band the Lords and under his own “Deep Soul Cole” moniker. He had a prolific output throughout the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s, playing with numerous acts including the Weeds, Lollipop Shoppe, the Rats, King Bee, Zipper, and many others.

In 1987, he formed Dead Moon with his wife Toody (on bass) and Andrew Loomis (drums). The next year, they put out their debut single “Parchment Farm,” which was the first of many releases for Tombstone Records—the Portland label founded by Fred and Toody. They released Dead Ahead, their final LP, in 2004 before breaking up in 2006. The band later reunited in 2014 after Cole had open-heart surgery. In 2016, Andrew Loomis died of lymphoma.

In 2006, Dead Moon were the subject of the documentary Unknown Passage: The Dead Moon Story. Recently, a Kickstarter was launched to fund a massive art book and record set about the band. After the dissolution of Dead Moon, Fred and Toody Cole formed Pierced Arrows, who put out LPs in 2008 and 2010. Fred and Toody continued touring and played shows as an acoustic duo in 2016.
