Denise LaSalle, best remembered for her 1971 hit, “Trapped By A Thing Called Love” (#13-Pop, #1-R&B) died Monday at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville of “complications from a recent surgery”. She was 78. Denise had her right leg amputated last October—the result of a long-ago fall. Born near Sidon, Mississippi, her family moved to Chicago in the ‘60s and was signed to a subsidiary of Chess Records in 1967. She and her husband formed an independent production company that placed “Trapped By A thing Called Love” with Detroit’s Westbound Records in 1971. Other pop cross-overs included “Now Run And Tell That” (#46- Pop, #3-R&B-1972) and “Man Sized Job” (#55-Pop, #4-R&B-1972). While continuing to perform, she later moved to Jackson, Tennessee, where she opened a blues café. Her dream of opening a blues academy of performing arts was left unfulfilled by her health issues.
