Viola Thompson Griffin, 95, widow of Claude Thomas Griffin, passed away Sunday, December 31, 2017.
Born in Seneca, SC, she was the daughter of the late Henry J. and Mae Moore Thompson. Mrs. Griffin was a graduate of Anderson Girls High School and was a pitcher for the All American Girl’s Professional Baseball League and participated in the movie “A League of Their Own”. She and all the AAGPBL members were honored with an exhibit in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY in 2003. Mrs. Griffin was inducted into the S.C. Athletic Hall of Fame as well as proud to be inducted into the T.L. Hanna High School Athletic Hall of Fame. She also received the Order of the Palmetto Award from the State of SC. She was retired from Essex International and was a member of Belton First Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Claudia Key and husband, Douglas of Winston-Salem, NC and Carol Farthing and husband, Tom of Simpsonville; four grandchildren, Brett Key and Justin Key and wife Keri, Alexandria and Sydney Farthing and two great grandchildren Judson and Maeson Key; two brothers, Jack Thompson of Anderson and Horace “Tab” Thompson of Easley; and two sisters, Donna Styles of Travelers Rest and Margaret Dillard of Anderson and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Carlisle, Floyd, Harold, and James Thompson and two sisters, Fredda Acker and Ninetta Spearman.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel conducted by Rev. T. Dale Lynch. Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 1:30 – 2:45 p.m. prior to the service.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 366, Belton, SC 29627, or the charity of one’s choice.
