In reply to: Betty 's message, "Joan D. Neville , Daughter of a Hollywood director and silent screen star" on Tuesday, March 13, 11:09:53am

August 6, 1927 - February 6, 2018 Joan Dee Neville passed away peacefully in her home on the evening of February 6, 2018. She had been with her immediate family throughout the evening. Her last concerns, as was typical of Joan, was to make sure that her dog Freddy was taken care of and that her ashes were to be spread along the Dordogne River in southern France. Joan of was born on August 6th, 1927 in Hollywood, California. Her parents were D. Ross and Francis Warner Ledderman (later Francis Bailey). Ross, as he was known, was a highly regarded director for Warner Brothers for many of the early Johnny Weissmuller Tarzan films and John Wayne western movies. Joan's beloved mother, Francis, was a beautiful silent screen star, and though encouraged to do so, did not make the jump into "talkies". The family home was in Toluca Lake and Joan attended Hollywood High School. Joan then attended college at UCLA and was a member of the Alpha Phi sorority where she met many life long friends. After graduation, having received her Bachelor of Arts with an emphasis in Architecture and Design, she worked for several prominent architects including Pereira & Luckman and Welton Becket, ultimately leading to her own highly successful design career as Joan Neville Interiors, ASID, in Los Angeles and Newport Beach. Some of her clients included John Wayne, Big Canyon Country Club, John Wayne Tennis Club, and many prominent homes and businesses in Southern California. Her "eye" was amazing and you could tell when it would go slightly out in the distance she was seeing a vision. Many marveled at how she "saw" things and her taste was of "true elegance". In the early-1950s Joan married Bobby Gardner the UCLA and California Amateur Golf Champion. After only a few short years, however, the marriage ended. While Joan was continuing her design career in Los Angeles she met the love of her life, Richard Neville, from Washington DC. "Dick" was raised in Japan as his father was in diplomatic positions throughout Asia. He was an air force veteran of the WWII Pacific theater, a graduate from Harvard and NYU Law School, entrepreneur, and an outstanding golfer. They were married in 1957 and honeymooned in Tokyo and Dick's family home in Karizawa. They settled in Bel-Air, west Los Angeles and soon after Joan's only son, Gregory Jon was born. In 1964 Joan and Greg moved to Balboa Island and eventually Big Canyon where she remained a member for over 40 years. Joan loved to play golf and had her first hole in one at Bel-Air Country Club, the second one being at Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach. She is preceded in death by her parents, D. Ross Ledderman and Francis Bailey, and husband Richard Neville. She is survived by her son Gregory Jon Neville and her precious granddaughters Emerson Elise and Avery Jane Neville. We would like to thank the staff at Care Plus and Interim for their wonderful care and assistance over the last few years. There will be a celebration of Joan's life later this summer in Newport Beach. In lieu of flowers and in honor of Joan, donations can be made at aspca.org.
