One of the oldest living relatives of the founder of Tigard had passed away.

Curtis Tigard was born in 1909 and lived to the age of 109.

Tigard was a World War II veteran and graduate of Oregon Agricultural College, now known as Oregon State University.

Tigard Mayor John Cook tweeted about Tigard’s death Wednesday evening, saying he left behind family and “countless friends”.

Martha Worley with the Tigard Historical Association says Tigard had boundless energy and a youthful spirit.

“It was a shock when I heard he had passed, even though one shouldn’t be shocked at 109,” Worley said. ‘He lived a good, long healthy life and we are going to miss him.”

Tigard was known as East Butte until the late 1800s, when renamed Tigardville after the postmaster, who was also Curtis’s dad.

The name was later shortened to Tigard so the railroad wouldn’t confuse it with Wilsonville.

The Tigard Facebook page posted remembrances to Tigard, including an interview he gave in 2011.
