Dies at 86

Don McGuire, 86, husband of Maxine McIntosh McGuire, passed away Fri, Sept. 7, 2018 after a short illness. Born in Hazard, KY, he was a son of the late Asher and Pearl Combs McGuire. A graduate of Hazard High School, he was also a graduate of Western KY University where he played basketball for the famed Coach Ed Diddle. He served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Don was the last surviving member of the singing group The Hilltoppers, who in 1952 was the #1 group in the United States with mutiple top 10 hits including "P.S. I Love You" and "Trying" ......touring the US and World in the early and mid 1950's. The Hilltoppers and Don were inducted into the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame in 2013. Don published a book in 2017 called "From Big Bottom to Broadway" that told the story of his amazing life from his humble beginnings in Hazard KY to the bright lights and fame of show business. He was well known throughout the state of KY after his career with The Hilltoppers, he retired from Harcourt Brace Jovanovich Publishing Company. Affectionately known as "Papa Don" to all who loved him, besides his wife of 65 years, survivors include two daughters, Cindy (Billy) Shell and Lisa (Jeff) Baumgardner; a son, Kreis (Betty) McGuire; 9 grandchildren, Brad Horn, Whitney (Joey) Roberts, Tanner (Neal) Gallacher, Casey (Maggie Noelle) Baumgardner, Parker McGuire, Emily (Justin) Shell, Spencer McGuire, Katelyn Baumgardner, and Maggie (Jen) Shell; two great grandchildren, Asher and Haden Horn; and two nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby McGuire and a granddaughter, Abbey Tyler McGuire. Visitation for family and friends will take place on Tues, Sept. 11 from 4 - 8 pm at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Rd. Funeral services will be 10:30 am Wed, Sept. 12, 2018 at the funeral home by Dr. Robert G. Baker. A private family committal service will be held at Camp Nelson National Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Bobby and Don McGuire Scholarship Fund, c/o WKU College Heights Foundation, 1906 College Heights Blvd, Bowling Green, KY, 42101.
