In reply to: Passed away this morning; we'll have more info shortly 's message, "Peggy Sue Gerron, who was the inspiration for Buddy Holly's classic "Peggy Sue"" on Monday, October 01, 09:50:53am

Peggy Sue Gerron, the subject of a solo hit single by rock And Roll Hall of Famer Buddy Holly, died this morning (10/1/18) at a Lubbock Hospital. She was 78.

Here’s that classic 1957 #3-peaking hit by Buddy Holly …

Here’s how Buddy Holly, drummer Jerry Allison and bassist Joe B. Maudlin looked and sounded with the song on the Ed Sullivan Show….

Buddy Holly died on February 3, 1959 along with Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper in the celebrated plane crash that would later be famous in the 1972 hit, “American Pie” by Don McLean. Mauldin was 74 when he died in 2015. Jerry Allison is still alive and recently turned 79.

Although the Coral record label said it was a solo hit for Holly, both his fellow members of the Crickets—Allison and Maudlin—were in on the recording. Allison and producer Norman Petty co-wrote the song. Holly was added as a co-song-writer after his passing. Peggy Sue wasn’t the love interest of Holly but rather Allison. When I interviewed Jerry Allison in 1987, he told me how he’d married Peggy Sue but that the marriage didn’t last long.

Among the acts to have recorded “Peggy Sue” are the Hollies (who named themselves after Holly), the Beach Boys, the New Riders Of the Purple Sage and Waylon Jennings. Sadly and ironically, Jennings gave up his seat on the plane to the Big Bopper February 3, 1959…and it haunted him for the rest of his life.

The success of “Peggy Sue” led to the song “Peggy Sue Got Married,” which also became the title of a 1986 movie. That song was recorded with just Buddy singing and playing his guitar, but would later become a studio recording..
