Pensacola - Lester G. Beasley, the president of the National Quartet Convention and the longtime owner/manager/singer of The Florida Boys, passed away on November 17, 2018 at his home near Pensacola, Florida. Born in Crockett, Texas, in 1928, Mr. Beasley would go on to become one of Gospel music's most influential personalities. After serving with distinction in the Marine Corps and receiving a battlefield commission during the Korean War, Mr. Beasley would be hired by J.G. Whitfield of Pensacola, FL, in 1953 to sing in his Gospel Melody Quartet, which was later renamed The Florida Boys. After the retirement of Mr. Whitfield, Mr. Beasley assumed part ownership (along with fellow Southern Gospel Music Hall-of-Famers, Glen Allred and Derrell Stewart) and leadership of the quartet, and continued in those roles until 2007. The Florida Boys and Les Beasley individually were also inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. During his time with The Florida Boys, Mr. Beasley became a key, decisive leader in the development, promotion, and expansion of many of the entities that have provided the foundation of the modern era of Gospel music: "The Gospel Singing Jubilee" TV program, the National Quartet Convention, The Gospel Music Association, the Dove Awards, and others. Mr. Beasley is survived by his wife of 50 years, Frances Beasley, along with daughters Belinda Whitfield, Deborah Kemp, Theresa Baker, Elaine Seay and sons Mike Bell and Clarke Beasley, along with 12 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchildren. The family will be receiving friends at Olive Baptist Church in Pensacola, Florida, from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. followed by the funeral from 12:00 p.m. - 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday, November 27th. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Gospel Music Trust Fund, P.O. Box 932, Brentwood TN 37024.
