AUSTELL, Ga. — Dr. Sarah Elizabeth Stedman died peacefully at Tranquility Hospice, Austell, Ga., Friday, Nov. 9, 2018, after a long and valiant fight against metastatic breast cancer. Surrounding her with love at the time of her passing were her wife, Dr. Ruth Hepler; and brother-in-law, Mr. Tom Hepler.

Sarah was born June 5, 1945, the first child of David E. and Sarah White Stedman. This marked the beginning of a life characterized by grace, beauty, talent and, mostly, a loving, caring, generous heart.

A lifelong learner, Sarah’s formal education was in music. Upon completion of her undergraduate degree at Guilford College, Greensboro, N.C., Sarah pursued graduate studies in music at UNC-Greensboro and Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., from which she was awarded the Doctor of Music degree in 1985. Her excellence in her field was recognized by election to two music honor societies, Pi Kappa Lambda and Mu Phi Epsilon. Upon completion of her doctorate, Sarah served on the music faculties of Beloit College and Northwestern University. She also maintained a private studio in both piano and voice and was active as a performing artist specializing in four-hand piano with colleague Bea Van Denmark Isaak.

Though music was her dominant passion, Sarah’s talents ranged broadly to include notable skills as equestrienne, painter, gourmet cook and ordained civil celebrant. A significant life event was her serving as Miss North Carolina in the 1968 Miss America pageant at which she was awarded the talent trophy based on her piano presentation of a favorite Chopin selection.

Although Sarah’s accomplishments were many and notable, those of us who were fortunate to have had her in our lives will always remember her as a bright, loving light that made this world a better place.

Preceded in death by mother, Sarah White Stedman, Sarah is survived by many such fortunate persons, including father, Mr. David E. Stedman; loving wife, Dr. Ruth Hepler; brother-in-law, Mr. Tom Hepler; sisters, Nancy Jane Calloway and Ann Louise Stedman; four nieces; several grand-nieces and nephews; “heart family” members, Mike and Phyllis Owens and Josie Miller; as well as innumerable friends and colleagues.

A memorial service celebrating Sarah’s life will be held Saturday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m. at St. Catherine’s Episcopal Church, 571 Holt Road, Marietta, GA 30068. A reception will follow in the church parlor.
