April 23, 1954 - September 29, 2018

Richard Meech's life was full of laughter, love, a wide-ranging curiosity and the search for wisdom. Sadly, Richard died unexpectedly of urosepsis after a prostate biopsy. We will celebrate Richard's life on Tuesday, December 18th, at the Great Hall, Hart House, University of Toronto. The ceremony will begin at 1:30 p.m. (Doors open at 1 p.m.) Richard was the beloved son of Carol Crockett Meech (d. 2018) and Richard C. Meech, Q.C. (d. 2007). He was named after his grandfather Richard George Meech, Q.C. (d. 1990). Richard will always be remembered by his loving partner of 24 years, Jill Rigby; his close siblings Susan, Peter, Sarah (Sally) and Nan; his extended family; his friends and the many others whom he connected with along the way. Richard was educated at Blythwood Public School, Upper Canada College, Queen's, Harvard, the Sorbonne and the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris (as a Rotary International Scholar). An avid reader, intrepid traveller and attentive listener, he never stopped learning. Working with Butterfield & Robinson unleashed in Richard a love of adventure and a fascination with foreign cultures. His adventures continued around the world with his creative collaborator Michael Grant in their Emmy Award-winning Millennium: Tribal Wisdom and the Modern World, a series of ten one-hour films seen by over 70 million viewers worldwide. His other film and television production work included 72 Hours: True Crime, the Gemini-nominated film In the Shadow of a Saint: The Ken Wiwa Story, and several episodes of both Exhibit A: Secrets of Forensic Science and National Geographic's 13-part series Doctors Without Borders: Life in the Field. In 2010, Richard wrote, directed and produced Ayahuasca: Vine of the Soul, a documentary reflecting his strong intuition that a radical shift in consciousness is necessary for truly comprehending the natural world. Three years ago, Richard and Jill moved from Toronto to Salt Spring Island, B.C. Amid the natural beauty of the island, they planned exciting new projects and adventures. Recently, Richard had begun attending courses in the Philosophy, Cosmology and Consciousness department of the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) in San Francisco. He hoped to teach there one day and to create a film or series in collaboration with Sean Kelly and others at CIIS. He was excited to have found a group dedicated to exploring the same set of ideas that had been inspiring him for his entire adult life. Richard sought a deeper understanding of the human condition in the modern world and felt a strong desire to contribute to the ongoing transformation of our culture. What he might have done next in his life journey, we can only imagine. The original obituary for Richard, containing additional information, was published on October 13, 2018. Condolences, photographs, or memories may be forwarded to family members at meechandrigby@gmail.com. The Richard G. Meech Anima Mundi Scholarship Fund will provide financial assistance to Canadian students in the department of Philosophy, Cosmology and Consciousness (PCC) at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS). The PCC department aims to shape the leadership necessary for profound, progressive transformation of social institutions and individual consciousness.
