Gloria Gaffney Hocking

Gloria Gaffney Hocking died in Dallas, Texas, November 28, 2018, after a brief illness. She will be remembered for her love of family and friends, her relish for travel and acting, and her contributions to the culture and well-being of her communities. Gloria's warmth, kindness, compassion, liveliness, directness, and sense of humor brightened the lives of all those who knew her. Gloria was born June 16, 1936, in Cleveland, Ohio, daughter of Joseph Francis Gaffney and Mary Margaret Yaw Gaffney. Gloria moved with her parents and siblings to Shreveport, Louisiana, in the 7th grade and traded being a Yankee for being a Southerner. While at Byrd High School in Shreveport, Gloria was voted "Most Versatile," a most accurate prediction of the way Gloria would lead her life. After her junior year in college, her maternal grandmother, Rachel Owens, offered her the once-in-a-lifetime chance to travel by ocean liner to France to study at the Sorbonne in Paris for a year, thus beginning her lifelong passion for the French language and culture, for travel in general, and for forming friendships with unique and diverse people. After her year in France, Gloria returned to Shreveport to graduate from Centenary College. While teaching at the Southfield School, she met Sam Hocking on a blind date, and they married shortly thereafter on December 26, 1959, in Shreveport. The Hockings moved to Dallas in 1963. In the midst of raising three children, Gloria pursued her devotion to the theater and completed her MFA in Acting at the SMU Meadows School of the Arts in 1970. As a professional actress, Gloria performed in theater, TV, and film throughout the region. In addition, she was in great demand as a book reviewer, creating her own one-woman shows with bookings a year in advance. She was a member of the Actors' Equity Association and SAG-AFTRA, and performed at the Dallas Theater Center, Theater Three, Stage One, Undermain Theater, and Dallas Shakespeare Festival. Other professional and community activities include teaching French at Lamplighter, Hockaday and St. Mark's schools. Gloria and Sam joined the congregation of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in 1963, where Gloria was a dedicated lay reader. Gloria was a member of The Junior League, Dallas Woman's Club, and Dallas Shakespeare Club, UCG, Lectio Divina, and the Cowgirls. As an avid life-long learner, Gloria continued to keep her French fluent with conversation classes in both Dallas and Santa Fe, New Mexico, where the Hockings spent their summers starting in 2000. In Santa Fe, the Hockings attended St. Bede's Episcopal Church, and Gloria was a volunteer for Creativity for Peace. Gloria was predeceased by her parents and her brother Pete Gaffney. She is survived by Sam Hocking, her husband of 59 years, daughter Monique (husband Tom) Black, son Sam (wife Jennifer) Hocking, and daughter Margee (husband Nils Senvalds) Hocking; grandchildren: Audrey Black, Meredith Black, Mac Hocking, Oliver Hocking, Finn Hocking, and Evans Senvalds; and sister Peggy (husband Robert) Shemwell. Other survivors include sisters-in-law: Molly Hocking and Charlotte Gaffney. Gloria was loved and admired by many and touched all their lives. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church,8011 Douglas Avenue, Dallas, TX 75225 or to Creativity for Peace, 369 Montezuma Avenue, #566, Santa Fe, NM 87501 or www.creativityforpeace.com/donate-2/ for the Gloria Hocking Fund for Peace, which will underwrite the costs of training young Israeli and Palestinian women to be leaders and peacemakers. A memorial service will be held on December 18 at 4:00 pm at Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 8011 Douglas Avenue, Dallas, TX 75225.
