Sue Busch

It is with deep sadness that we say farewell to Suzanne Te Roller Busch who passed away peacefully, her family by her side, at the age of 91. Sue was born to Jeanne (Lind) Te Roller and Derk Rae Te Roller in Seattle on June 22, 1927 and moved to Palo Alto at the age of 3. She attended Castilleja School and then moved to San Francisco and attended Hamlin School.

Sue graduated from UC Berkeley in 1950 with a degree in history and thereafter traveled to Europe. She married Juan de Sanz in 1954 and they had three children Juanita, Miguel and Marc. She obtained her real estate license and started her own business and worked in residential real estate for many years in the city she adored.

In 1973 Sue fell in love and married the novelist/screenwriter Niven Busch. With Niven and his three children: Jerry, Liza and Nick (the twins) family became her main focus. With six teenagers the household on Baker Street was always abuzz with laughter and joy. There, with the "not a motel" sign posted in the front window, Sue was happiest. Always curious and adventurous, she traveled the world with Niven and developed a remarkable eye for collecting photographs.

Sue was a woman of the highest character and the best mother a son or daughter could hope for. In the early 70's she began a tradition of summer vacations for "The Clan" in La Jolla. As her children got older, Sue had 7 grandchildren and she continued the tradition for the younger generation again in La Jolla and then Hawaii. She will be remembered for her devotion to her family.

She was a member of the Metropolitan club and was awarded for her alumni work at Hamlin. While our hearts are heavy, they are filled with gratitude for this remarkable woman. All who knew her will miss her extraordinary warmth, winks and love. She will live on through friends and family including her grandchildren: Suzanna, Tom, Jack, Sarah, Nate, Emma and Britton.

The family gratefully thanks Jennifer Fernando, Lucy Ascalon and Patchi Villarosa, for their compassionate care of Sue.

A family service will be held to honor and celebrate her life on Saturday December 8th at 3:00 at the Towers 1661 Pine Street. San Francisco.

Published in San Francisco Chronicle from Dec. 5 to Dec. 9, 2018.
