Humorist Bob Bryan, Co-Creator Of 'Bert and I' Duo, Dies At 87

December 13, 2018

One of Maine's most beloved humorists has died. Bob Bryan, co-creator of the 'Bert and I' storytelling duo, died Wednesday in Quebec at the age of 87.

Friend and fellow Maine humorist Tim Sample says Bryan helped put the state on the storytelling map with his dry wit and keen observations about Mainers and their culture.

"It's never mean-spirited. It's never angry," Sample says. "It's not put-down humor or anything like that, but it always picks up on some essential thread of what it means to be human."

Bryan recorded the first "Bert and I" in 1958 with the late Marshall Dodge. The album, which became a classic, continues to sell well. Marshall Dodge, the other partner in the duo, died in 1982 after being struck by a drunk driver. He was 45.
