Former Boston Police Commissioner Francis M. “Mickey” Roache died today. He was 82.

On its blog today, the police department said it mourns the passing of Roache, who served as commissioner from 1985 until 1993.

“Mickey Roache was an honest cop who treated everybody with dignity and respect,” said former Mayor Raymond Flynn. “Whether he was serving in the United States Marine Corps, teaching kids how to box, heading up the Boston Police Community Disorders Unit or Boston Police commissioner, Mickey Roache was a person of honesty and integrity. Every man, woman and child in the City of Boston could trust Mickey’s integrity and judgment.”

The Massachusetts Association of Minority Law Enforcement Officers, Inc., sent its condolences on Twitter to his family and friends.
Roache graduated from South Boston High School in 1954 and enlisted in the Marines. He joined the Boston Police Department in 1968.

After serving as commissioner, Roache continued to serve the city as a member of the Boston City Council from 1996 through 2002.

“Mickey Roache had a profound impact on this city,” said Charlie Burke, Roache’s chief of staff at the time. “He moved race relations forward and was a great listener. The BPD is a better place because he served at the helm. He made the department a more welcoming environment by being approachable.”

After his time as an at-large councilor, Roache went on to become the Suffolk County register of deeds until 2015.
“We ask that you join with us and keep the Roache family in your prayers,” the police department said, “as we thank our former commissioner for his service to the City of Boston.”
