Pat Buttram, who played Gene Autry's sidekick on the singing cowboy's television series and Mr. Haney on "Green Acres," died on Saturday at the University of California at Los Angeles Medical Center. He was 78.

The cause was kidney failure, said Bill Ward, a longtime friend.

Mr. Buttram performed on "The Gene Autry Show" on CBS from 1950 to 1956, helping Mr. Autry keep the peace out West while getting into silly predicaments. The two had met on the WLS "Barn Dance" radio show in Chicago before moving to Hollywood.

Mr. Buttram was the son of a circuit-riding minister in Alabama. He studied theology at Birmingham Southern College but went into show business when a local radio station hired him after a performance in a college play.

His big break came when he went to the Chicago World's Fair in 1933 and was interviewed in the audience of "Barn Dance." Everything he said got laughs, and he was signed as a comic.

From 1965 to 1971, he played the annoying Mr. Haney on "Green Acres" on CBS. It was Mr. Haney who sold a tumbledown farm to a New York lawyer, Oliver Wendell Douglas, played by Eddie Albert, and his wife, Lisa, played by Eva Gabor.

Mr. Buttram is survived by a daughter, Kerry Galgano.
