Dies at 68

William Spainhour Olsen

William (Bill) S. Olsen, 68, of Hickory, died Tuesday, January 1, 2019, at Frye Regional Medical Center.

Born December 17, 1950, in Hickory, he was the son of the late Clifford Robert and Betty Spainhour Olsen.

He is survived by two sisters, Barbara Olsen Burns and husband Ken, and Mandi Olsen, all of Hickory; step-mother, Betty D. Olsen of Linville; her children, Steve DíAdamo of Fairfax, VA and Renee DíAdamo of St. Croix; two nieces, Liz Olsen and Katie Shuford both of London, England; and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Bill spent his early years enthralled by movies, often watching movies at the downtown movie theaters all day. At age 12, he and a friend made his first home movie, and from that point on he was never without a camera. He decided to pursue a career in filmmaking.

Bill graduated from Lees-McCrae College and attended UNC-Chapel Hill for three and a half years and studied radio, movie and television and then left to pursue a film career. He was Executive Director of the S.C. Arts Commission and made several movies and documentaries while in South Carolina. Bill made several feature length movies, one premiering in New York City. After a successful film career, he turned to writing novels for young adults.

Long known for his infectious sense of humor and a determined passion, his closest filmmaking friends always stayed in touch. Bill was always a fun person to be around and remained an inspiration to many. Bill was employed by Corning Global Security for 10 years.

Funeral services will be held at St. Albanís Episcopal Church in Hickory, Saturday, Jan. 19, at 2:00 PM followed by a reception at the church.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that memorial gifts be made to the charity of oneís choice or St. Albanís Episcopal Church, 130 39th Ave. Pl. N.W., Hickory, N.C. 28601.

Bass-Smith Funeral Home & Crematory in Hickory is serving the family of Mr. Olsen.
