James Pond, a writer/producer for 25 years on such comedies as Newhart, Night Court, Hope & Faith and Living Single, has died at age 60. He passed on Jan. 3 at his home, with the cause as yet undetermined and being investigated by the county coroner.

Born Nov. 19, 1958 in San Diego, the family shortly thereafter moved to Costa Mesa, Calif. Pond graduated from Mater Dei High School in 1977 and attended Orange Coast College, majoring in journalism. He transferred to UC Irvine, then spent a year at the University of Missouri.

His first job was in public relations for Wynn Oil Company and later Toyota Motor Sales, USA,. After two years at Toyota, Pond and friend Bill Fuller quit to try to break into Hollywood as comedy writers.

Less than a year later, they earned their first writing assignment and eventually enjoyed a 25-year career writing and producing for major comedies, rising to executive producers for the last season of Living Single.

Pond retired from television seven years ago and spent his time writing short stories.

Survivors include two stepdaughters, Nichole Burgeno Christianson and Danielle Christianson; ex-wife LoRee Pond; and his cousin, Jeffrey Kelley.

A memorial mass will be held on Sat. Feb. 2 at Saint Joachim’s Catholic Church, 1964 Orange Avenue, Costa Mesa, 92627. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Saint Joachim’s in Ponds’s memory.
