Sometimes I feel that facebook is quicker than the obits. He might have JUST died. Should we not post deaths if they are only reported on facebook and not the "normal" obits first?

I would be interested to hear Chron's take on this. I get a lot of news about people dying from friends in the business but I hesitate to talk about it until it is confirmed by an old fashioned newspaper source.

NOTE: Social media, though not official published obituary, certainly has been used as personal evidence of a notable's passing, and have proven useful to report early information of death notices.
