TV STAR DEAD Fawlty Towers star John Quarmby who starred in iconic ‘Basil the Rat’ episode dies, reveals John Cleese

FAWLTY Towers actor John Quarmby who starred in the iconic "Basil the Rat" episode has died, John Cleese said today.

The 89-year-old was best known for playing Health Inspector Mr Carnegie in the hit British television sitcom.

He also played Henry Tobias in the 1981 film K-9 and Company and appeared in various TV shows including Z-Cars and Porridge.

Mr Cleese, 79, wrote on Twitter this morning: "Sad to hear of the death of John Quarmby who played the health inspector in Basil the Rat episode.

"Lovely chap. I shall never forget the expression on his face when he saw the rat sitting in the biscuit tin."

Mr Carnegie famously found Manuel's pet rat in a biscuit tin in the season finale of the second series.

Basil Fawlty had spent the whole episode trying to find the pet after it escaped from the cage - only for the health inspector to stumble across it.

Mr Quarmby, who was born in Liverpool, enjoyed a 50-year career on TV after spending two years in the RAF.
