Fox News host Jeanine Pirro's mother, Esther Ferris, has died of pancreatic cancer. She died Thursday at 90 and had been a longtime resident of Elmira, New York.

Pirro, a former Westchester County district attorney and a former Westchester County Court judge, said in a statement that her mother was her inspiration, a person who cared about others.

"She taught me how to fight for the underdog," Pirro said, adding. "She was my muse, my hero."

Pirro said her mother "stood up for the victim, for the abused, before it was vogue ... She took care of the people who couldn't take care of themselves."

Pirro described her mother as a "passionate volunteer in her community, serving as a Pink Lady at St. Joseph's Hospital and in the Women's Auxiliary at the Arnot Art Museum in Elmira.

Ferris was a gardener, winning first prize in the Elmira Garden Tour at the age of 88.

Pirro described her mother as "spry," saying she managed her family's properties and even helped shovel snow, doing tasks right up until she became ill.

Ferris was born in Cortland, New York, grew up in Beirut, Lebanon, and returned to the United States to spend most of her life in Elmira, where Pirro and her sister, Mary Louise Gershowitz, grew up.

Ferris spent time in New York City as a model.
"She was a very beautiful person, both inside and out," Pirro said.
