EastEnders star Douglas Felding has died.

The actor, who also appeared in police drama Z Cars, was 73.

His family confirmed the sad news in a statement, saying: "We all love and miss him.

"He was a well known actor and lovely man and will be sorely missed."

His agent, Emily McGuire, also paid tribute.

She said: "It was a privilege to know him and represent him."

Douglas began his career in television back in 1968, when he appeared as Young Hodge in Mystery and Imagination.

He went on to star as Sergeant Alec Quilley in Z Cars from 1969 to 1978.

It was one of his best known roles, as well as his starring turn as DS Roy Quick in EastEnders.

He starred in 51 episodes of the BBC soap in 1985 and was the show's first regular police officer.

Douglas went on to appear in a number of TV shows, throughout a career that spanned 50 years.

People might also recognise him from The Bill, ChuckleVision, Family Affair and Doctors.

Following news of his sad death, people took to Twitter to remember him.

Oliver Crocker said: "Shocked and sad that the great Douglas Fielding has passed away.

"A quality actor and a kind, generous, lovely man who was very good to me. One of life's good guys. My thoughts with his family.

"Thanks Doug for your friendship, your talent and your sparkle! #zcars #quilley #legend."

Another pal said: "A real stalwart of Z Cars, who had the closest of friendships both on screen and off with James Ellis.

"I met Douglas Fielding a couple of times back in 2003 when researching Z Cars. He was an affable, funny and fascinating guy."

Douglas was born in London in 1946.

During his career, he also appeared in video game Privateer 2: The Darkening, alongside Clive Owen in 1996.

His movie credits include Holding On (1999) and Hooligan Legacy (2016).

Just last year, it was announced that he'd landed a guest-starring role in the 21st series of crime drama Silent Witness.
