I know she was not billed as one of the main actors, but just like some of the Andy Griffith Show's small roles, she was important as an assistant to the holograph Doc.

Yes, art sadly imitated life for John in the end. Oddly, John Spencer's 'Leo McGarry' character in TV's "West Wing" suffered a near-fatal heart attack in season 6, which aired October 2004. Spencer himself died in December 2005. His TV character 'McGarry' died of fatal heart attack on Election Night episode, which aired April 2006.
