In reply to: FUN FACT: Rip's mama Thelma was aunt of actress Sissy Spacek, which makes her Rip's 1st cousin! 's message, "If you think about it, "Rip" Torn has got to be the dumbest CHOSEN stage name (birthname Elmore Rual Torn Jr.) who made it big. But I know the nickname was an early family thing. ..." on Sunday, December 08, 12:04:27pm

(I'm paraphrasing)

He chose to use that as his go-by name when he went to Hollywood so that he could stay true to his rural roots. He said it got him into some predicaments from time to time, because the snooty Hollywood elite would sneer at him. He said that one time at a big Hollywood producer's house party, he saw that there was a large wall (or maybe a tree, can't remember) that stood close to the swimming pool and he said he could easily make a jump from the top of it into the water. He said that everyone there laughed at the idea and said there was no way he could do it.

He goes and does it--and is met with stone cold silence and glaring looks. Apparently, because they said it couldn't be done meant that him showing them otherwise was an insult to them, and that his phone didn't ring for several months after that night, and he honestly believed he might have killed his career.

I swear, when I saw the Hunger Games for the first time, I IMMEDIATELY thought of that story when I saw this scene!
