Ron McLarty, who grew up in East Providence and went on to become an accomplished actor and acclaimed novelist, has died.

"One of our most illustrious alumni, author, playwright and narrator Ron McLarty 69, passed away on Saturday at the age of 72," Rhode Island College noted in a tweet Monday afternoon.

McLarty earned a Bachelor's degree in English from RIC in 1969, later donating the original manuscripts of his novels, plays and poems, as well as his audio book narrations, along with various other items, to Adams Library, which is located on the RIC campus in Providence.

A dedication ceremony was held in 2017.

"Fortunately, his legacy lives on through our archives," the post, which includes a photo of McLarty, went on to note.

He also has worked as a stage actor, as well as a narrator, and in film.

His website also notes that he received an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities from RIC in 2007, and the Charles B. Willard Achievement Award in 2005.

McLarty is survived by his wife, actress Kate Skinner.
