In reply to: Dies at 73 's message, "Singer Benny Mardones" on Monday, June 29, 09:49:04am

Benny Mardones, a one-hit wonder singer whoís the answer to a unique
chart trivia question, died Monday at the age of 73. Heíd been
battling Parkinsonís disease for many years.

Benny Mardones and the late 50ís-early 60ís group the Jamies were two
of a kind. They're the only two acts in history to take their only
chart hit into the top 40 twice. My special thanks to my longtime
friend, the late Matt Wilson, for coming up with this neat bit of
chart trivia. Iím discounting Christmas songs.

The Jamies made the 40 with their only hit, "Summertime, Summertime"
in 1958 and 1962...at least on one key chart. Meanwhile, Benny
Mardones was peaking at #11 in the fall of 1980 the first time around
with a song he took back to the top 40 nine years later...and check
out the way this ballad builds to its dramatic emotional fade...

"Into the Night" became a Top 40 hit all over again in 1989 after one
or two Arizona radio stations played it...and then Scott Shannon added
it to his Pirate Radio station playlist in Los Angeles. Eventually, a
newer "Into The Night '89" would become a Top 40 hit again.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Benny Mardones when his only hit
made the 40 again in 1989. He told me two incredible stories and both
would be told by Shadoe Stevens on "American Top 40." One story was
how, when Benny was in his teens, he was part of a fight at a bar that
ended abruptly...with a gun in Benny's mouth. In the other story,
Benny told me how he was struggling mightily financially...but still
refused to sell a photo of himself with Elvis Presley. For more on

Oh, here's how the Jamies sounded...love those doo-wop vocals..
