LOS ANGELES, July 8—Chester Stratton, an actor whose career included the theater radio, television and motion pictures, died at his home here yesterday apparently of a heart attack or a stroke. He was 57 years old.

Mr. Stratton had appeared on Broadway with Ethel Barry more in “White Oaks,” Katharine Cornell in “The Barretts of Wimpole Street,” and in many other plays, including “Man and Superman,” “The Connecticut Yankee,” “The Live Wire” and “Island Fling.”

On radio, he was the leading man in “The O'Neills” for 10 years, Carter Trent in “Pepper Young's Family” and Hop Har rigan in “Ace of the Airways.” He also had starred often on the Lux Radio Theater, Caval cade of America and the Schlitz Playhouse.

With the advent of television Mr. Stratton appeared in hundreds of live dramatic presenttions from New York and Holly. wood, and was frequently guest on television talk shows.

Among the movies in which he appeared were “The Greatest Story Ever Told,” “Lover Come Back,” “Advise and Consent,” “In Harm's Way” and “Bus Riley's Back in Town.”

Born in Paterson, N. J., of parents who were both in the theater, he began his career as a child, touring in repertory shows and appearing in vaude ville, movies and many Broad way shows. He studied at the University of Alabama and Rutgers University.

Although he spent most of his life as an actor, the tall, blue‐eyed Mr. Stratton, during lay‐off periods, drove a furni ture truck, sold washing ma chines and worked his way to Europe on an oil tanker.

Surviving are his widow, Marion, and a sister, Mrs. Helen Shelley.

A funeral service will be held at 3 P.M. Friday at the Church of the Hills, Forest Lawn, Holly wood Hills. Calif. ...

I remember Stratton in a ton of things in the 1960s -Hogan's Heroes, Mannix, Dragnet, Beverly Hillbillies, Munsters, I Dream of Jeannie, Perry Mason, Bewitched, Dick Van Dyke Show, and countless others! -Here is rare recording w/Vera-Ellen...I had no idea he died so young.Tuesday, July 07, 12:29:40pm
