Mark Elliott, who was best known for his famous voice on Walt Disney commercials/promos but also filled in for Casey Kasem, died Saturday in Los Angeles. He was 81. He’d been battling lung cancer along with two heart attacks.

John Harrison Frick Jr. was born on September 24, 1939 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Believe it or not, his first radio station was KPIG/Cedar Rapids.

Elliott’s success as the voice of Walt Disney Productions overshadowed his success as a countdown DJ. He filled in for Casey Kasem on “American Top 40“ seven times off and on from 1977 to 1982.

More importantly, he voiced the first countdown show that gave AT40 a run for its money. “The Weekly Top 30” debuted nationally on the weekend of July 7, 1979. That first show's #1 song was “Chuck E’s In Love” by Rickie Lee Jones. Before the song was played, there was an interview clip with the song’s subject, Chuck E. Weiss, who provided his voice from a phone booth.

It was the sign of things of come. “The Weekly Top 30” included many interview clips from singers, songwriters and DJ’s, all of which helped distinguish the show from AT40. However, the lack of a significant number of affiliates led to “The Weekly Top 30” airing its last show on January 9, 1982, when the #1 song was “I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)” by Hall and Oates.

His superior voice and ability to record his voice often once earned him the nickname of “One Take” Elliott.

He was the voice of Rice-O-Roni and the CBS TV network before becoming the voice of Walt Disney Productions in the Spring of 1996.

I’ll never forget what Mark Elliott told me when I interviewed him for my book, “American Top 40: The Countdown Of The Century.” I mentioned how I won a trip to Disneyland in March, 1959, as a paperboy…then three times visited Walt Disney World in the springs of 1990-92 as part of an AT40 promotional show. Thus, I told Mark how I was lucky to be able to get into Disneyland and Walt Disney World both for free.

“I can do you one better,” Mark replied. “I’ve been able to visit Disneyland and Walt Disney World both for free…and get paid to do it!”
