Having the car pulled over happened more often than I'd care to admit. Spankings on the side of the road, rest stop, or in the car were most certainly not just a threat.

I recall my mother and aunt making threats like that while we were going somewhere. My parents separated and then divorced when I was 7 so I don't recall any long trips with both my parents, but my mom and aunt took the three of us and my cousin on trips together quite a few times.

Eddie was a of couple months younger while my sister and little brother were 2 1/2 and 7 years younger. So for trips it was either the four kids in the back or the three of us in back when Robby was very little and in my mom's or aunt's lap up front. (Yes that kind of thing was common pre-seat belts.) As you can imagine this arrangement led to a number of times when one or more of us were in trouble. Most often it was Eddie and I squabbling or the two of us picking on Maggie that led to spankings.

Most of our traveling was in our home state of Michigan or just over the border to the Indian Dunes or similar places, and virtually none of this was on Interstate highways (in fact those weren't even authorized until I was 7 though some parts of it like the Indiana Toll Road were already built and just given I-# designations.) So there were always places alongside the road to pull over into. And believe me those got used. Often this was just a small area with a small parking lot for a scenic view or a picnic table.

The worst times were when someone else was there or arrived son thereafter because Mom and y aunt didn't care if anyone else was around, your pants and undies were both coming down for a spanking.
