Subject: Advice on how to approach the practice judging

I am currently studying for my AD. Have been reviewing the book and music over the past couple of months, but with the spring feis season in full swing, I am going to attend local competitions to get some practice. Candidates (successful OR unsuccessful) who have taken it in the past, how did you approach this? Did you immediately sit in with an AD, or did you first attend a couple of competitions and sit in the stands with a notebook? My plan was to attend a couple solo & just get the feel for it, and then ask if I could sit with some AD's from there. And my strategy is to start with the grades, and deal with championdship later. Any advice on your thought process while preparing for this would be appreciated.
