You can upgrade the cpu of your laptop if it is a pentium III to another pentium three if it uses the MMC-2 from factor. All proccesors on a laptop sit on a daughter board connected to the motherboard. If it uses MMC-2(Mobile module connector 2) it can be interchanged with other pIII processors that are already on the daughterboard. This means interchanging the daughterboards. With PGA-2 and BGA-2 the daughterboards can't be taken off, that means it is very difficult to upgrade and it is easier to just buy a new laptop. The MMC-2 proccesors go upto 850mhz. pII also uses MMC-2 so you can get up to a 500mhz proccesor. Dont quote me on the pII section because i know more about the pIII
