Well if JA had to choose a southern competitor, I'm sure she would have chosen Crystal for personal reasons. Again, what is wrong with a system who doesn't pick its titleholder based on the values of MAO and who will best represent the state at the MA pageant, but rather based on the director's "feelings?"
