Subject: Football status for PJ

Because of my surgery, I can NEVER again play football or any "contact" type of sport.

Here is the deal: I only have one kidney now. I can function fine and will do well with just one BUT I have to have at least one. Without a kidney I would die without a transplant or dialysis. I MUST, however, protect my happy kidney. I am on some diet restrictions now but I can lift those in a few weeks after Rightie gets used to flying solo. The doctors STRONGLY DISCOURAGED football or any "contact" sports due to chance of injury, albeit possibly minimal. I cannot risk hurting Rightie. My coach said NO! He said that he did not want to risk it for me. He said it was not worth losing my life to a bad hit. He also said the school's insurance would not permit it. Dad is against it and Mom said categorically no way in hell. So, I am done!

I am so bummed and sad inside but, frankly, I agree. Nothing would probably ever happen but if I took a tackle or a hit the wrong way in my right side, even with pads, I could injure the only kidney I have and I would be dead in about three days. I have to evaluate my priorities. Truly my life is worth more than playing a game.

Coach said I could still be with the team and I could move chains, keep stats, and manage equipment. I will take what I can get. I will still be with the team and can sit with them and travel with them. Camp is out due to the physical activity EVERYONE undertakes.

I am so glad I earned my letter last year. I will still wear my letter jacket with pride.

GO Bulldogs!!

As soon as I am stronger, I will start running and doing pushups again. I have to wait on the doc's OK to start lifting and doing sit-ups. I can't wait. I feel so out of shape and soft right now.

Looks like track won't happen at our school again this year. I could have done track if it were available.

Mom and Dad suggested swimming or tennis. I may look in to swimming. The school does not have it but there is a local rec team here that trains and competes in swimming. Dad and Mom said I could do it if I thought I wanted to.

We will see.

Well, I was looking over the swimming team's web site. I don't think I will like them.

Football, baseball, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, volleyball and wrestling are out.

Any ideas? Not sure I would be in to tennis.

What about golf? I was never too good because the windmills and clowns get in my way but I guess I could try it again.

All our school would need for a golf team is at least four, preferably five, interested students and a willing faculty member (I have one in mind)to sponsor us and we could play in TSSAA sanctioned matches. Caleb loves golf. Hmmm . . . thinking.

PJ:

Sorry to hear about your surgery. I've been off of the boards for a few months -- nothing bad - life just hectic and grad school going crazy along with working full-time.

Listen - you rest and 'take care' of PJ. You're definitely in my thoughts and prayers as you recover.

Hey PJ,

I kind of missed what was going on with you and everybody else, because I have not been reading the forum a lot recently.

You just have one kidney now? That sucks! I hope this whole thing is over now.
I would have been totally freaked out if they had taken my kidney. I hate doctors.

That's great that you can still support your team, even if you can't play anymore. You can analyze the other teams and help the Bulldogs win in that way. I'm sure you'll be fine.

I don't like tennis, but swimming sounds pretty cool.
And what about Track? You like running, right? Maybe that is the right sport for you?

Hang in there!

Hey Little Brother,

We are truly "sorry" to hear that you can't play football again in high school!

THIS SUCKS!

But, your health and LIFE comes FIRST!

We can understand how you must feel. Sports has been our almost entire life since we were first introduced to it by each of our dad's and then more by coaches who taught us the fundamentals!

That is GREAT you still can be apart of the football team. We think you would make a GREAT "Stats Man" or like what you said, whatever your offered to help the Bulldogs out!

It will be great that you will be there to help support Mark W., although he is capable to do for himself, etc. as he earned MOST VALUABLE PLAYER of the BULLDOGS on his own!

Looking into another sports to play at your school is an option and you told of some of the sports offered. What do you think would "fit" you?

You have our support in whatever you do or chose! You always have with us Little Brother, and we are so PROUD that you earned your football letter!

Don't know how your school gives "awards" but, even guys helping with our football team, non-players, earn and receive Letters and additional Awards so you could continue maybe to receive of Football Related "awards" and recognitions!

Hang in there, Little Brother! Your still a STAR PLAYER with us four!
