During the Golden Age of girdles, I remember an incident with my mother. She had bridge club and one of the women did not wear a girdle. She was horrified and it became a topic of conversation at breakfast the next morning.
My mother had arranged that everything was perfect for the evening. She thought that it was so rude for her friend to show up without being properly supported by the great girdles that existed in those days.
