I'm a bit older, being born in 1949, and I'd say it's fairly likely. Note though most shots in the bottom are nowadays given in the high back hip. If the inoculation requires a sizeable amount a large muscle is preferred and the largest one we've got is the bottom. This is particularly true the smaller the patient. Also babies' arms and legs can be wiggly and children can be scared and flinch away. It's a bit easier to use the bottom which won't move so much.

I obviously can't recall all my shots, but there are several I recall quite well. One was for the measles (or perhaps chicken pox). We didn't have a preventative vaccine in those days, but my older sister came down with it and Mom took me to the doctor's. I got a shot in the bottom for that lying over my mother's lap. It was not the hip I know because it was painful to sit on it for the ride home.

Twice after injuries I got penicillin shots. One of those was I believe given in the bottom and one was given in the hip when I was older. I don't know if the change was because I was bigger or was a change in practice.

The one other shot I recall getting in the bottom was I'm pretty sure intended originally for my arm. I was 6 or 7, which is a time when many boosters for baby shots are given. After a checkup I had to have some booster. The nurse came with the syringe in a small porcelain tray (kidney shaped I recall). In those days syringes were glass and reused after being sterilized in an autoclave. When she got to me I hit or pushed her arm and she dropped the syringe and had to prepare a new one. I'd been sitting on the exam table so I guess I was going to get it in the arm. But while she got a new one prepared, Mom put me in her lap and spanked me. When the nurse returned I got the shot in my bottom still lying in my Mom's lap.

Jonathan thank you very much. How likely do you think it is that she got shots in the bottom at ages 11/12? I like to think about her getting shots this way? This would have been about 1966/68.

That would depend. Penicillin is often given that way (bottom or hip) because it involves a large amount of a viscous fluid. Penicillin is not a routine inoculation but is given for bacterial infections. The first oral versions were not very effective so if she got it in the 60s it was likely a shot and likely in the bottom or hip.

I don't fully know but I can't see her going through ages 11 and 12 without the flu or something, and she had parents that ruled with iron fists and so I am sure she was taken straight to the Dr. How painful of a shot would a Penicillin shot have been for a 11/12 year old in the 1966/68 era? As an educated guess, how do you think she was likely positioned for the shot or shots?

You don't get penicillin for the flu. Flus are caused by viruses and penicillin is used for bacterial infections. So I think the chances of her getting penicillin for the flu are quite low.

If it was received it would mostly likely have been for a bacterial infection after an injury or for strep throat. Some people believe that a penicillin shot helps you faster than the usual ten day oral dose. There is little evidence in support of that, but it isn't worse either and I don't think a doctor would fight parents if they were strongly in favor of the shot. Some side effects like nausea are more common with oral administration.

The main side effect of Penicillin shots (other than allergic reaction which can occur with oral as well) is that they can be fairly painful. This was particularly true back in those days when the vaccine was more viscous and required a larger needle and took longer to inject.
