But these zones are dangerous to inject because the sciatic nerve runs there But I saw injections in the centre of the buttock many times. When I was a kid an injection was always given in the middle of the buttock. It was very rare case where the sciatic nerve was affected. But today, we live in a society where everyone is afraid of a lawsuit if something goes wrong, so they tend to give the injections in a different spot. [ Post a Reply to This Message ]

I would never recommend making IM injection anywhere else then into the upper outer quarter. If someone likes doing them in another part of the buttocks, only very shallow and subcutaneous ones can be considered safe. They were the old glass syringes & 18 gauge x 2" needles. The throwaway syringes came into use in about 1965 or 1966 & then the needles were only 1 1/2" long & they used 18 gauge thru 22 gauge & they started doing it higher up & to the side of the butt cheek.
