Hi guys,

Today's forum header is the 24th sound short released by MGM; The Chimp.

I am going to ask readers of this forum if they can spare 25 minutes today in taking the time to give this film a quick viewing, and post any comments relating to the film.

I myself have always thought this was one of the poorest L&H shorts, but I shall view it again from a fresh perspective and hopefully find something about it which may swing my opinion in a more positive favour?

See here for THE CHIMP review on my site.

For those of you too lazy to get your DVDs out, you can view a grainy Film Classics version of the film on You Tube.

For the best viewing experience, you want to see the film on The Essential Collection DVD, where it has not only the best picture quality but also the original opening titles with the animated drum.

I've begun posting films from the mostly-forgotten Mickey McGuire series (starring a young Mickey Rooney). These were rivals to Hal Roach's "Our Gang" series. Several of these shorts are rather bizarre (and cheaply made). Even so, like the various less-known short comedies from Roach and other studios, I don't think this series deserves to be forgotten. I have about 30 of these shorts, and hope to get them all up.

If anyone is able to dig up any films from this series, or identify any actors from the series, I'd greatly appreciate it. I've put most of the information on the series I have on a Wikipedia article.

Here's the first short I've posted, 1927's "Mickey's Pals" (or the first half, anyway, as that's all I have of this short).

Let me explain...

At this juncture in time,no domestic trailer for neither PARDON US nor SWISS MISS have surfaced, but someone was very generous to upload two ITALIAN trailers of the films on You Tube.

Enjoy!

Hello
Friends...

For some time,VIVIEN OAKLAND was a regular in the "Average Man" series starring the great Edgar Kennedy. In celebration of Vivien's birthday today, here is a fine example of her work in one of the 104 short subjects Kennedy had made for RKO-Radio Pictures between 1931 and 1948.

Enjoy!

Hi guys,

Well, in deciding on today's forum image I had quite a selection of births to choose from.

May 20th was the birthday of STANLEY FIELDS, VIVIEN OAKLAND and PATRICIA ELLIS.
Oh.... and it was also the release date of SWISS MISS too, but that was never going to be an option!

I really wanted to put Patricia Ellis up on the forum header, but I felt Vivien Oakland's contribution to the films of Laurel & Hardy was more significant.

Stanley Fields, also only had one L&H role, as the sheriff of Brushwood Gulch - so in the end Ms. Oakland won the decision.

Pray tell, what is YOUR most memorable "Vivien Oakland scene"?

I thought my Forum friends would appreciate my latest You Tube music video creation, for it uses specially-selected segments derived from this delightful comedy short subject with music. But just a warning to those who haven't seen this little jewel yet...there is an abundance of chorus girl bums shaking about in the show-stopping finale!

Hi guys,

Over the past 24 hours, Tom and I have sat and watched some Laurel & Hardy in my living room.

We have watched THEM THAR HILLS, TIT FOR TAT, PERFECT DAY (last night) and TWICE TWO and LAUGHING GRAVY tonight.

I laughed only a few times throughout watching these films, but found myself (and Tom) roaring with laughter whilst watching TWICE TWO. Oh man, that film is just so damn funny!

One thing we both agreed on though is the 3-reel version of LAUGHING GRAVY is painfully slow. "It's too sentimental", said Tom. I agree - that is the exact word that describes it.

As you can imagine, whilst I am hosting my guest, my attention is not on my website, nor updates. Just the bare minimum with the "On this day" page until Monday.

I shall catch up on all forum activity and e-mails on Monday - promise.

One thing I have discovered over the weekend is that is so much more fun to watch L&H with your friends than it is to watch them on your own. I realised this when watching NOTHING BUT TROUBLE, BLOCK-HEADS and A CHUMP AT OXFORD with my friend Mick Roche, at his house in recent times.

Having a wonderful weekend!

Hello

If one wishes to see how COUNTY HOSPITAL's infamously unrealistic rear projection chase sequence COULD have been if done correctly, then look no further than the ambulance chase scene found in the Pitts & Todd vehicle,SNEAK EASILY. Believe me,you won't be disappointed for it works really well!!

I recently enjoyed another viewing of Stan and Ollie's "JITTERBUGS", and at around 58 minutes, behind Ollie there is a glamour girl portrait. Do you think it could be of our darling Thelma Todd? It looks like her to me. Whaddya reckon??

Here are a few questions for you to answer from your own personal perspective. Your opinions are valid and I look forward to seeing everybody's answers.

I know Mick will offer a "everything is great" answer, so he can be excused for having an extra cup of tea.

1. Name your 3 L&H VILLAINS (actor/which films)

2. Name 3 L&H co-star BEAUTIES (actress/which films)

3. Least-favourite post-Roach L&H film?

4. In which year would you say L&H reached their peak?

5. Name a L&H film which you particularly like even though it is widely considered to be a "lesser" film?

6. If you were in a wrestling tag-team match, which L&H co-star would you want as your partner?

7. Now this question relates to storyline and characters only - not the real actor: name 3 characters that you do not like from L&H films?

8. What was the last L&H film you watched/part-watched?

9. Name a film on my "Filmography" page (still incomplete, by the way) that is listed that you would like for me to grab the cast screenshots from. All answers given (one per person) will be honoured.

10. Finally, name any scene in any L&H film that is simply "not believable"?

I shall post my answers after I read someone else's!
Cheers.

I do respect the opinions of ALL Laurel & Hardy fans - ok so I don't usually agree with them, but I never say I am right and they are wrong.

Well...... until today.

I was reading on Randy Skretvedt's Facebook page an article in which he mentions me and my website (thanks for that, Mr. Skretvedt) and the topic was the L&H film, WRONG AGAIN.

One of his friends, Chris Long from Australia, commented:
Don't know why, but "WRONG AGAIN" probably rates - with me, anyway - as their best silent, apart from "BIG BUSINESS".

Seriously? Have you even SEEN the other 40 then Chris? "Wrong Again" is, in my opinion, the most boring, unfunny crock of Laurel and Hardy shite ever produced - apart from Early To Bed.... an opinion which Randy shares.

I'd love to know how anyone can deduce that WRONG AGAIN is even remotely entertaining?

See HERE for my review on the film.

During his very brief two-season tenure at the Hal Roach Studios,James Burtis can be seen in the following films...

"The Bargain of the Century" (Pitts & Todd short 1933 directed by Charley Chase)

"Benny From Panama" (All-Star Comedy With Music short 1934)

"Sprucin' Up" (Our Gang short 1935)

"Bonnie Scotland" (Laurel & Hardy feature 1935)

"General Spanky" (Our Gang feature 1936)

He is many times mistaken for character actor Otto Fries.

If it were not for the sonic expertise of Elmer R. Raguse and his crew from Camden,New Jersey,we wouldn't be able to hear the Boys (as well as Charley Chase,Thelma & Zasu,Harry Langdon,Our Gang),the delightful music cues of LeRoy Shield, nor the memorable sound effects found in these wonderful Hal Roach Studios short subjects which we honor and celebrate here on this site.

Actually, these aren't uncut versions. They're all edited prints from the TV series "Mischief Makers". The current Amazon description only lists the titles under their new TV names, but I was able to find the original titles for all but two ("The Brave Chimp" and "A Quiet Sunday!!"). And the question remains, who is the youngster featured so prominently on the front covers?

Volume 1:
THE BIG FIRE (The Fourth Alarm)
SWEET REVENGE (Tired Business Men)
RIDE 'EM COWBOY (War Feathers)
MARY'S DREAM (Mary, Queen of Tots)
FOOTBALL RIVALS (Mickey McGuire in "Mickey's Eleven)
AN AVERAGE DAY (Hybrid episode featuring clips from "Playin' Hookey", "Telling Whoppers", "Love My Dog", and "Ten Years Old")
http://www.amazon.com/Mischief-Makers-Kornman-Mickey-Rooney/dp/B00BKUO40Q/ref=pd_sim_sbs_mov_2

Volume 2:
LITTLE RED SCHOOLHOUSE (Commencement Day)
HAPPY HOLIDAY (Good Cheer)
THE BRAVE CHIMP (Could this be a Dippy Doo Dads short?)
THE DOG CATCHER (Love My Dog)
BACK TO SCHOOL (Mickey McGuire in "Mickey in School"; I actually used some footage from this print in order to put together a more complete print of the original film. You can find it on YouTube).
THE MUSIC LESSON (Saturday Morning)
http://www.amazon.com/Mischief-Makers-Volume-Kornman-Farina/dp/B00BKUO30C/ref=pd_sim_sbs_mov_1

Volume 3:
LITTLE HEROES (Young Sherlocks)
COUNTY FAIR (The Big Show)
A QUIET SUNDAY!! (Not sure what this one is; could be "Sunday Calm)
ALL ABOARD (The Sun Down Limited)
SUMMER DAZE (Buster Brown in "Knockout Buster"; a more complete version can be found on YouTube).
THE OUTING (One Terrible Day)
