Subject: Ottawa info

Hi all,

I don't have anything to do with this year's organizing committee, and honestly, I'm currently living in Portugal so some of this info might not be 100%, but I thought I'd offer it up for those needing a start.

When we had the Nationals in Ottawa in 2007, I put together a list of things to do, where to shop, etc. that proved to be useful to quite a few people. It's been archived here. It's a little dated, since I moved away from the area a few years ago, and also wrote it up with summer visitors in mind, but largely it's still valid.

For exmaple, the "Loeb" is now a METRO (and personally one of my fave grocery stores, especially since it gives you AirMiles- and if you're tight on budget but high on AMs, you can always cash them out for a gift certificate to buy groceries!). And what used to be the Elephant & Castle is now "The Exchange" (I don't know if it's still good or not).

Please be reminded that Ottawa *is* a city, and in particular around Rideau Street and the Byward Market are a few homeless shelters, Salvation Army, etc. If you step outside the mall and start wandering around, you may face some begging. I bring this up because of the shocked comments of some visitors from the 2007 Nationals.

My daughter- former Irish Dancer, now on the exec for Comhaltas Eastern Canada and Ottawa and Irish flute player- works at the Aulde Dubliner Pour House in the Market. It features live music on Friday and Saturday night, by the by. So if you stop in and see a lass with auburn hair and crazy green eyes, be sure to say hi to "Gen"!

I would like to respectfully suggest that attendees seriously consider frequenting the fine establishments that took out ads in the programme and who sponsored the event. They put out the money to help defray your costs, and hearing someone say, "I saw your ad in the Irish Dance competition's book" makes their investment worthwhile.

Don't forget that November 11th is a big deal in Ottawa, and there will be plenty of traffic blockages downtown. Most shops and restaurants will remain open. If you don't have to be dancing that morning, a stop by the ceremonies is quite moving.

Finally, a friendly suggestion for web searches for finding resources: go to yellowpages.ca and search "By Proximity".

Have a great weekend- I'll be watching for photos and vids from across the Atlantic, and thinking of good old friends and good old times!
