Author: make it about the best dancers.
Subject: Olympic contenders do not pay more than we do, because they spend years in their respective sports funding their own way before they are even considered for the team. All competitive athletic activities come with a cost - and, all told, they are comparable. The real difference is that
In reply to: olympic contenders pay way more than we do... 's message, "The organization is the teachers of north america. Making the event smaller comes up year after year and gets voted down. It's not the event organizers who make that choice. Few schools have huge entries; most schools enter about ten-15 dancers. If they vote to tighten NAN, they may be voting out their students thus their reason for going. I'd LOVE for NAN to shrink; fewer judges, simple venue, simple awards - but then they'd be called cheap on the message boards." on 23:54:59 12/07/11 Wed

only a very few athletes make it onto the Olympic team in any given sport - about 15 per team, total, not per school. In ID almost anyone that breathes can make it to NANS, which means it really isn't a "major" competition at all - just a big feis.

The problem really is that everyone has gotten used to the expectation that they should be able to go "for the experience," regardless of their chances of recalling, let alone placing. Earning the right to be there is no longer the mindset. The competition has been watered down to an untenable level, because the focus is now on how to sustain the numbers and secure the huge venues, because we don't want to disappoint anyone.

The whole argument that teachers don't want to vote out their students doesn't hold water - you'd think they'd only want to send the best of their best. That's what competition is all about, after all - earning the right to be there, because your dancers are the best they can be, not because they're just there to fill a quota.
