Subject: 2015-2016 Success

So the 2015-2016 is rapidly approaching, what teams do we think have a chance competing at the "national" level? Seems like this board talks about everything but, but hey maybe that is the mindset. Name of the game is winning, not talking about everything else that surrounds it.

I am a proud alum/fan and want nothing but success for 'gate, but let's look past the smoke and mirrors.

Realistically, hockey-wise, I don't see the team achieving quite the success we had last season. We've lost some very good seniors, including Spiro, who will be hard to replace. We have the Spink twins and Kyle Baun, who will form a potent offensive first line, but unless we have some outstanding frosh coming in I don't see us as a top-4 team in the ECAC. It would be great if we could get back to Lake Placid, but it's going to take a lot of hard work and some good coaching and luck.

Baun was drafted by the Blackhawks and is gone.

Precisely! The accuracy of input, responses, etc. here mimics the accuracy of FOX News and MSNBC.....delete the 50% or so spin and wishful thinking and you are left with facts....hopefully. That said, go 'gate!

Other than hockey, lax, and FCS fb, what teams are ever capable of competing at a "national" level? Don't get me wrong, that good enough for me. Hockey and lax could compete with nationally ranked teams last year (6 wins and a tie against ranked teams between them).

I think this is a good post/question. I'll take a crack at it, If I leave some sports I apologize.

If we are talking "national" level only (NCAA) here we go.

FB-NO Shot (I aught to get an ear full from the faithful that are still living in the glory years.)
WSOC-Slight Chance (losing their top asst. will hurt)
MSOC-Slight Chance (think this program is on the upswing though)
VB-Good Chance-depends on recruiting I guess, program always seems to be knocking on the door, which is a good thing.
FH- NO Shot (deck is stacked against them)
TEN-See FH
WBB-NO Way, NO How, NO Shot
MBB- NO shot-Be lucky to win 10 games (we'll see how that contract extension & most likelya big raise goes over when they struggle, and I am pro-Langel fan.)
MIH-Good chance (solid team and ECAC is always a dogfight, they will be just fine.)
WIH-Program is improving, will get in the ECAC play-off's this year, but still a long way to go.
MLAX- Very good chance-One of a few programs that has a legitimate shot at competing nationally (hard to play with the big boys all the time when the same level of support isn't there though.)
WLAX-Throw WLAX into same boat as men, but they probably have more support (Title IX)
SB-Slight chance-Not sure if they can breakthrough this year.
T&F/Rowing/XC-Sorry, no discussion needed.

Just an opinion, hope some teams step and surprise this year.

FB will surprise on the upside and MLAX will surprise on the downside.

Puckman is forgiven! Though I do think we'll be a little better than your forecast. I'd be disappointed if we weren't top 4 in the ECAC, and would think we'll be nationally ranked most of the year.

Also hoping football has a run, but the first few games are a gauntlet. Maybe if we keep the injuries to a dull roar...

Am also required to mention our rugby team, which is competing at a 1-AA level and was nationally ranked in 7's during the spring. Though not technically a varsity sport they are a program on a serious rise!

Injuries or lack of will be key vs last year's critical losses.

It reaches an almost comedic level that we are only talking about 1 may be 2 sports that potentially reach NCAA's this year. Is this the apex for a school like Colgate? It would be a shame if that were the case, but winning is winning. Maybe the new president will place a greater importance on that type of success once they are settled in and can get a clear idea of what is going on. AD's are paid to generate revenue and hire/retain good coaches, curious what the perception is. Once the importance of winning is clearly outlined, maybe steps will be put into place to get a better idea on what the next steps are.

The original poster nailed it....this thread is now deliberating the first 3 games of the year for football. A couple of people actually mentioned who they thought would compete on a national level, while others bask in the life of an FCS football program that attracts 3000 spectators (if lucky.)

this thread has nothing to do with football scheduling, but I am not surprised it has been hi-jacked to discuss it. topic was "national" success. i know it may be difficult but think big picture. if you want to test out the profile of FCS football, ask 10 random people who won the national championship last year and see if they even come close.

If football gets in the national playoffs then the thread is relevant. So big fella are you afraid to give a football prediction. I say you are since you don't know squat about our football program. I doubt you are an alum.

4-8 or 5-7, feel better? and i probably know a little more than squat, but whatever keeps your starch stiff in your collar. interesting it matters to you if i was or wasn't an alum. guess you'll just have to do your sleuthing this fall in the maroon council parking lot.

Seems to me our new friend downtown would like to make a larger point, that many of our teams aren't competitive nationally. My personal reaction to said point is if you're making it you've got little understanding of our sports heritage or Gate's place in the national sports scene... but knock yourself out if you think we're somehow underachieving, I'd suggest you meet a student athlete or two and then see what you think.

I'm thinking we beat Yale & would love a UNH upset, but 1-2 would be OK through the first 3. After that if we stay healthy we can beat any/everyone...

I see a 1-2 start also, but am afraid Lehigh is loaded and takes the PL this year. But then again....what do I know? I'm just puckman.

Glad to see some lively conversation with this thread. I think we all can agree we want to see 'gate succeed. Just hope everyone is on board to make it happen. There are some passionate folks that have the ability to make it happen.

Interesting that Downtown has Colgate football winning the Patriot League and going out in the first round. I see the team winning more games (and hopefully winning the title).

I think the team should be very good this year and a monster next year. Last year's team had a first time head coach, offensive coordinator, and special teams coordinator. Plus, they had a new defensive coordinator running a new scheme and a first year QB for a number of the games. Having a year under their belts should help all of these guys. Colgate lost four games last year when they were tied or leading in the 4th quarter. Colgate also had a chance to tie the Lehigh game in the 4th with a chip shot field goal for a kicker who is nearly automatic but a snap and a hold that were just a little bit off jammed him a bit and he pushed it right.

With the depth this year's team will have and the extra year of coaching experience and experience at the QB position--or maybe an incredibly talented freshman QB stealing the job--I don't think Colgate loses the Lehigh, Lafayette, or Delaware games that they lost last year. I think Yale still would have been a tough one to pull out but Albany easily could have gone the other way.

Obviously, good teams win these games (and it's easy to forget that Princeton and Holy Cross easily could have been loses) but so do experienced coaches and players. I'm not sure if Colgate has ever had a younger team then last year. The top offensive skill players at every position return (with the exception of FB) and the OL is loaded. The freshmen on the DL gave Bucknell fits in the last game--and these guys will only get better. 40 players are in Hamilton for the summer and the team has the best depth at QB that is has probably ever had with Melville coming off a really good end to the season. Special teams used to be an incredible liability, now they are a real strength. The defense looked the best it has in years and wasn't overmatched schematically or athletically for the first time in forever. The DL and LB's are the best they've had in years and moving Morgan to safety should help offset the loss of Armiento.

Just a few years ago, Colgate was about controlling the clock on O with a demoralizing rushing attack and keeping the D off the field and hoping nothing horrible happened on special teams. Now, the D has playmakers all over the place and special teams is running back kicks and blocking punts and making plays. The offense returns a year stronger, wiser, and better and should start creating problems for other teams. As a true homer with the maroonest of glasses, I can only say the future in Hamilton, New York is very bright.

That is an excellent and I feel accurate appraisal of the prospects for the team this year. Lack of serious injuries is clearly important.

Having refrained from comments on the upcoming fb season, I offer these:

`1-fb's status involves the first 3 games of course, but also the entire season and most importantly the program. I would not be surprised that Gate is being significantly underrated for 2015 , and it is beyond clear that the program is experiencing a significant uptick. Next year they will play SU in the Dome and fans will not be disappointed.

2- In addition to comments expressed by posters above, it is respectfully offered that this year's team will display something hardly synonymous with Gate fb, comments as to which comments pro and con would be appreciated- and believe it or not it is this - explosiveness. Focusing for the present on the O, look for the more Holland who can be expected to break loose on a good number of plays. Add the qb and a player injured early last season(Connor Wingenroth) and incoming frosh Chris Cervizzi, a 5'7' rb who shows quickness, excellent cutting ability, remarkable balance and the ability to emerge from a group of tacklers and make some exciting runs. The issue here is how to put as much of this talent on the field at the same time. A challenge for the O coordinator and special teams coach, but also for the opposing D coach who will have to deal with it. Add in receivers such as Greenawalt, other wideouts and incoming recruits including 2 from Illinois and Ryan from Pa ( who is listed at 4.42 in the 40)and the O coordinated has a lot of triggers he can pull in any situation. Not like the Gate of old, not by a long shot.

Quazza gets first team
Diener and Steffan second team

http://www.americanfootballnetworks.com/15D1AA-Pre.htm

There are a lot of players listed who have graduated and also one player both on both the first and second team (would probably be a first to pull that off) so list is a bit junkie but nice to see those guys get recognition.

Seems Colgate is looking for a receiver's coach:

Agreed with get 'em on team speed with incoming class/WIngenroth. Ryan looks fast to me--seems to have a different gear when he turns the corner. Wingenroth getting a carry early in the game against Ball State says something about what the coaches think of him. Cervizzi should drive people crazy--how do you see that guy if you're a LB? He's 5'6" and has as quick of a burst as anyone. So many fast DE types who will get bigger. Some guys might not find their position for a bit--but I could see a lot of the incoming guys being very good as juniors--many at positions they didn't play in high school. With the existing guys and the guys coming in this team seems very solid and as deep as any squad in recent memory.

Any word on players in Hamilton for the summer? Any incoming frosh in town? would be interested how players look and if any standout.

you are going by reputation. lehigh is not loaded, and they finished in 6th place last year. they won't be picked for higher than 4th or 5th this year.

Hey, he said he's just puckman! But I agree, Fordham is the team to beat in the PL this year. And like some of the other posters I think we're going in as a solid dark horse with a chance to surprise some folks.

BU top seed. FU lost 16 starters ,still good but not top dog.
Gate and Pards both capable of being in that mix,if they answer their own issues. Cross has some real good skills on both sides but little else and still slow.Lehigh could be very good, very bad or anywhere in between. Too many unknowns to even attempt a guess.
