Interesting that Downtown has Colgate football winning the Patriot League and going out in the first round. I see the team winning more games (and hopefully winning the title).

I think the team should be very good this year and a monster next year. Last year's team had a first time head coach, offensive coordinator, and special teams coordinator. Plus, they had a new defensive coordinator running a new scheme and a first year QB for a number of the games. Having a year under their belts should help all of these guys. Colgate lost four games last year when they were tied or leading in the 4th quarter. Colgate also had a chance to tie the Lehigh game in the 4th with a chip shot field goal for a kicker who is nearly automatic but a snap and a hold that were just a little bit off jammed him a bit and he pushed it right.

With the depth this year's team will have and the extra year of coaching experience and experience at the QB position--or maybe an incredibly talented freshman QB stealing the job--I don't think Colgate loses the Lehigh, Lafayette, or Delaware games that they lost last year. I think Yale still would have been a tough one to pull out but Albany easily could have gone the other way.

Obviously, good teams win these games (and it's easy to forget that Princeton and Holy Cross easily could have been loses) but so do experienced coaches and players. I'm not sure if Colgate has ever had a younger team then last year. The top offensive skill players at every position return (with the exception of FB) and the OL is loaded. The freshmen on the DL gave Bucknell fits in the last game--and these guys will only get better. 40 players are in Hamilton for the summer and the team has the best depth at QB that is has probably ever had with Melville coming off a really good end to the season. Special teams used to be an incredible liability, now they are a real strength. The defense looked the best it has in years and wasn't overmatched schematically or athletically for the first time in forever. The DL and LB's are the best they've had in years and moving Morgan to safety should help offset the loss of Armiento.

Just a few years ago, Colgate was about controlling the clock on O with a demoralizing rushing attack and keeping the D off the field and hoping nothing horrible happened on special teams. Now, the D has playmakers all over the place and special teams is running back kicks and blocking punts and making plays. The offense returns a year stronger, wiser, and better and should start creating problems for other teams. As a true homer with the maroonest of glasses, I can only say the future in Hamilton, New York is very bright.

That is an excellent and I feel accurate appraisal of the prospects for the team this year. Lack of serious injuries is clearly important.

Having refrained from comments on the upcoming fb season, I offer these:

`1-fb's status involves the first 3 games of course, but also the entire season and most importantly the program. I would not be surprised that Gate is being significantly underrated for 2015 , and it is beyond clear that the program is experiencing a significant uptick. Next year they will play SU in the Dome and fans will not be disappointed.

2- In addition to comments expressed by posters above, it is respectfully offered that this year's team will display something hardly synonymous with Gate fb, comments as to which comments pro and con would be appreciated- and believe it or not it is this - explosiveness. Focusing for the present on the O, look for the more Holland who can be expected to break loose on a good number of plays. Add the qb and a player injured early last season(Connor Wingenroth) and incoming frosh Chris Cervizzi, a 5'7' rb who shows quickness, excellent cutting ability, remarkable balance and the ability to emerge from a group of tacklers and make some exciting runs. The issue here is how to put as much of this talent on the field at the same time. A challenge for the O coordinator and special teams coach, but also for the opposing D coach who will have to deal with it. Add in receivers such as Greenawalt, other wideouts and incoming recruits including 2 from Illinois and Ryan from Pa ( who is listed at 4.42 in the 40)and the O coordinated has a lot of triggers he can pull in any situation. Not like the Gate of old, not by a long shot.

There are a lot of players listed who have graduated and also one player both on both the first and second team (would probably be a first to pull that off) so list is a bit junkie but nice to see those guys get recognition.

Seems Colgate is looking for a receiver's coach:

Agreed with get 'em on team speed with incoming class/WIngenroth. Ryan looks fast to me--seems to have a different gear when he turns the corner. Wingenroth getting a carry early in the game against Ball State says something about what the coaches think of him. Cervizzi should drive people crazy--how do you see that guy if you're a LB? He's 5'6" and has as quick of a burst as anyone. So many fast DE types who will get bigger. Some guys might not find their position for a bit--but I could see a lot of the incoming guys being very good as juniors--many at positions they didn't play in high school. With the existing guys and the guys coming in this team seems very solid and as deep as any squad in recent memory.

Any word on players in Hamilton for the summer? Any incoming frosh in town? would be interested how players look and if any standout.
