FAN,

Thanks for drawing my attention to those photos. But not for the reason you might think.

What and why? Look at the 11 August photo by Bob Cornell of the Class of 1965 Arena steelwork which I believe was taken from the south end of Andy Kerr Stadium towards the former Van Doren Field. This structure will turn - and is already turning - into a most impressive building, Colgate's first major investment in athletics since, well, Trudy Fitness Center! Reminds me of the excitement around Case and Ho several years ago already.

I can't wait to get back on campus for the UNH football game and see this new project take shape.

Go 'gate!

Steve - If you click on that photo you'll get about 18 more shots of the Class of '65 arena that show its development.

I understand there are some labor problems and construction has been halted? Anyone know for certain?

Critic,

I checked with Ann-Marie and she reassures that all is on schedule. The lull in construction is simply to allow for checks on the existing steelwork structure before moving on to the next phases.

BTW, the webcam on gocolgateraiders.com may be repositioned away from the place its been pointing for the past few days. It was moved last week to point towards the steelwork at the south end after several weeks showing the north where there was no steelwork going up. The issue now is that what's showing looks static and too close up to get interesting perspectives. And so it would be preferable to go back to the north end and show how the steelwork is erected with a broader vista including a bit of the south end. That would add to our enjoyment and experience for a few weeks until we attend the UNH game ourselves.

Also, I understand that additional webcams will be set at other angles and to see the interior work too, in time.

Go 'gate!

Any word on how the football camp is going? Would also be interested how the frosh look. Two strong recruits listed at QB, four good receivers and apparently some DBs. Would be very interested how LB Nix looks

Current roster lists Holland, Russell and a lighter(quicker?) Wilkens at 230 all at TB.Gate needs Holland on the field as much as possible while Russell and Wilkins offer a lot. How often will Gate be playing two of the three at the same time?

Updated roster lists some players at lighter weights than recently listed. Are theses tsats current or does that information usually trail behind a bit?

I want some highly-recruited frosh to get start time and make an immediate impact like Edwards at Fordham. Branch, McCord, Scott, Eachus...where is our next breakthough RB that puts the rest of the PL to shame and Colgate back on the running game map?! This has been our bread and butter, our calling card, our claim to fame, for as long as I can remember. I hope it is still a priority for Hunt.

Fresh look good. Two decent qb's, Nix will be fine. We will use a two back set from time to time. My look at roster saw more kids put weight on than lost it.

[> Re: Football Camp Photos -- Gate Raider, 08/18/15 9:36:39pm Tue

Hunt did a local radio interview today. He said Russel, Holland and Wilkens will be used and they plan to have two in at the same time. Kind of gave the impression that Melville wouldn't be running as much. He again said the O line is as good as he has seen in his career at 'gate and the D line will be very strong. No mention of a QB other than Melville. Could be a first year getting time in D backfield. IMHO I would like to see Holland get the majority of carries. He was a spark in the running game last year and looked the fastest. I don't think the platoon system of RB's was that successful last year. Hunt was the offensive coordinator for some time and during the Branch, Scott, Eachus and McCord years. I don't understand why he has changed the format unless 'gate doesn't have a premier back as it has had in the past.

I actually like rotating TB's. Keep them fresh. I don't know what you mean that it didn't work last year. Russell has been a workhorse for a few years. He is a durable and smart running back. He reads the holes well. I do agree that Holland looks to have more break away speed and Wilkens can wear defensed down in the manner that Branch, et al, did in the past.
The coach know what he is doing. Perhaps as the season progresses, this will evolve.

[> [> [> And that's why it's important to bring Atwood along to take some of the QB beating -- Andy Kerr, 08/19/15 12:24:12pm Wed

Brett Mooney as a back up is more of a drop back passer. Not much of a runner.
Developing Sage Atwood as a back up dual threat quarterback may distribute the pounding that a QB receives in a read-option attack.
Regardless of what Hunt says about less running by Melville, it's his instinct, and it brings a lot of wear and tear.

I hear that Bret Mooney is doing very well. More mobile and running well. Don't write him off just yet. Hard for a freshman to step into the line up and even more difficult for a quarterback. Mooney had that problem last year without having the time and practice to develop the right reactions to different situations.

Mooney looked great at the beginning of the Yale game--ball jumped out of his hand. He may not be an outside runner but he picks up tough yards inside. Bring thrown into the starting job as a freshman against some good teams isn't easy. He ended really strong against Lehigh. Wasn't sure if we were going to see him to start the second half of the Bucknell game and then Melville came out and hit the first pass and played great the rest of the way. Colgate QB's tend to take a beating, so the more QB's playing well, the better.

Also, thanks for the info on the broadcast, GR. Seems like Hunt is alluding to either Castillo or Mimms at corner, right?

Last Indian, any other camp news? Any sophomores making a leap?

Two weeks to Navy. Two deep must be set.Any word on who is stepping up and also how frosh look?

Just one view as to game's key- will Gate LBs be quick enough, play position well enough and tackle as coached or will Middies run all over the field all day long? Need one LB to key on Navy qb.
