Could someone explain for me the purpose of playing one in conference and one OOC hockey game in Belfast, N. Ireland? Is there a benefit of travelling to Ireland to play hockey? Is it a hotbed for recruiting players? I doubt it amounts to a payday for Colgate considering the travel expense. Maybe they should have put the travel expense toward more scholarhips. Colgate is home next weekend and then they are away for 7 weeks in the height of the season. Not exactly great scheduling to attract loyal fans.

I am in Belfast now so am in a good position to reflect on what I saw last night at the SSE Arena.

Belfast is in Northern Ireland, not Ireland, and the Friendship Tournament has been very exciting and eye opening. Here is a city formerly beset with "the troubles" that continues to work through them in difficult economic times. There were about 2000 uniformed school children attending our game with Colgate and Brown banners, lots of cheering, screaming and music, and a joyous atmosphere. The Colgate team had been to some schools on Tuesday and met with students about what determination and diligence can deliver, irrespective of hardships. The lead up must have meant days of preparation work for those childrens's teachers.

About the adults, there are 2 administrators here from Athletics and they met with the mayor in a formal City Hall ceremony where the appreciation of the city was rolled out. That sets the tone. There are several hockey parents, UK alumni and the tour sponsored by the Alumni Office of Ireland and Belfast. And yes, there are 2 of their office coordinating the tour and our alumni receptions.

For me what ties down the spirit of the occasion is something that occured between periods. While walking on the concourse to our reception room a couple approached me with the Belfast Giants hockey jersey of last year. They offered it as a GIFT to us! Just happy to share the connection.

So I hope that this summary of day 1 gives you some idea about the benefits we get from being here. You might also ask the players and coaches when you next spend some time with them

Let's hope for a better result today!

Go 'gate!

There are so many objectives of the athletic progrogram that GR just can't fathom simply because they fall outside of providing entertainment for him in Hammytown !

Sounds like an amazing experience for players and fans and have no regrets. Looks like we'll be bringing up the rear in the ECAC and that the season is all but over until tournament time. Would think we would have a player glued to Lappin; when he gets points, Brown impresses. Unfortunate senior seasons for the Spinks and for Finn with no silver lining. And just 14 shots? Am not holding out any hope in the consy game to a team we have lost to already this season that is now 1-11.

We had several good top-4 seasons with no hardware to show for it. Guess now it's RPIs turn to rise and see Qpac finally get that elusive ECAC Title?

How much have all the players who left early s____d over this team and DV? Or what part of this disappointing year is not having recruited enough players, resulting in now being short-handed? Always a CU hockey fan, but would appreciate the opinions of all those more knowledgeable than yours truly on what happened...

Let's face it (and disrespect to the underclass men we have; they're trying)...we've had three sub par recruiting years in a row and perhaps TOO much focus on a new rink. If you don't get better each year in the ECAC you fall back. And next year could be really ugly. Better times lie ahead but not soon. I just hope we can avoid 12th place in '15-'16

Coat, you said you would not post any negative thpughts during T'giving. It's still T'giving weekend, so you went back on your word....LOL. I'm with you....better times must be in the pipeline, one would hope...or else '65 Arena is going to be anticlimatic.

"Belfast is in Northern Ireland, not Ireland..."

Yes and Northern Ireland is in Ireland. Ireland is an island that is comprised of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

[> Consy vs. NU -- gate, 11/28/15 12:21:13pm Sat

Northeastern scores 3 within 3 min. to start the 2nd and is pounding 'Gate 4-1. Appreciate some of Finn's contributions but am glad this is his last season. Colton Point (G, 6'4, 230#) looks promising. So much for the Spinks and their senior year. They had some sparks of greatness but the hype just never materialized IMO.

No need to beat a dead horse but we just gave NU its 2nd win of the season...after already giving them their first.

Wheels > bus > off.

There is no reason to believe Vaughan will make any necessary changes to turn this program around this season. Will always support the program, the terrific opportunities that allow our student-athletes to play overseas and combine athletic events with educational opportunities, but the national stage is watching.

And frowning.

Here's to a better half of the season after the New Year for Colgate. One game at a time and nowhere to go but up.

C'mon man. You can come up with 20 fluff reasons for flying all the way to Belfast to play hockey and none of them are valid. Frankly, sending a group of non-athletes that could have spent all their time performing some kind of social work would have been money better spent. This trip amounts to nothing more than a junket for the team and some Colgate employees. Call it what it is. There is nothing wrong with that. The lame excuses make it sound like you are trying to disguise it.
Now you can try to justify spending 38 million on a new hockey rink when the current one is rarely more than half full. Please don't use recruiting as a reason. Colgate has done pretty good in Starr and there are colleges with facilities no better than Colgate's that do quite well.

would agree with Gate Raider...sometimes I wonder if our administration treats the hockey team like a bunch of lab rats...let's waste time and energy traveling to Cape Cod for two or three years, now the Belfast thing...I hate to say this but it would appear that the players have partially quit on the coach and perhaps vice versa...all our energy goes into a new arena WITHOUT a full complement of scholarships and with three years of very poor recruiting...there's a lot of blame to go around, but the one thing that really burns me up was not laying the foundation for a good product BEFORE making a $38 million commitment...I hope the incoming kids are good; they'd better be or we'll have the same thing we have now: 1200 bored fans, 100 of which are students...

Get real, GR...didn't see you complaining when the team went to Italy which led to a solid season afterward. There's something to be said for an experience like this. My guess is the players do not get the opportunity to study abroad due to their sport and I see nothing wrong with it. If we had won the tourney, everyone would be singing the praises of the coaches, administration, and city of Belfast. Learn to appreciate others' "disguised" perspectives like I do to yours when nobody else does!

Am bummed Finn is only a Junior; hope Point impresses from the start.

I am trying to bring some perspective to the cost of athletics at Colgate and the cost of an education at Colgate. Please remember that the cost of athletics is shared by all of the students at the school and not just by those who participate in a sport. I support Colgate athletics in attendance and with dollars. I would like to see the dollars go where they will have the most benefit - scholarships for one.

Over $25 million in donations has been raised for the new hockey facility, and it's still ongoing. Over $200k was raised by the organizers of the Belfast tournament from private sources to cover the travel expenses of the participating teams. You seem to be confusing what is being spent with who is spending it.

$38 million is a lot of money for a new hockey rink the need of which can be argued and they still have to raise 13 more. Some of that money could have been put toward scholarships. I don't know where the money for Belfast came from. If it came from private donations, good. Perhaps the school should mention the source of funding in future announcements about such trips.

There is nothing to "be argued" and it's not up to others to supply funding information for the Belfast tournament or the new arena for that manner. Just look it all up yourself.

And before you go about insulting Colgate teams and social workers with your invective think about taking a deep breath, vent and ponder the likely consequences. A little effort and balance on your part can go a long way in avoiding approbrium.

Like I said yesterday, stop digging and move on already. OK?

Invective? Approbrium? My apologies for being a social worker who used taxpayer bucks to attend a state school rather than a social worker who attended an overpriced private college, but "invective" and "approbrium" in a single rant? I'm humbled and humiliated. By the way, why can't I find the latter of those two words in the dictionary?

There is no need to apologize for your background!

The earlier poster is correct in that I mistyped and thereby misspelled opprobrium. I may have been thinking of "Approval" which one might reasonably expect to earn when contributing on this site- something others might approve of, agree with and appreciate. No, not a rant, just a viewpoint or maybe a suggestion.

Anyway, now that you are using the words invective and opprobrium you have more arrows in your quiver. Nothing wrong with that, is there?

Go 'gate!
