Subject: Lehigh game

It's never too early to think about the big game coming up this Saturday. What do posters think of our chances against the EnginHawks? We both have 5-4 records and couldn't be more closely rated by Sagarin: LU at #187 and Gate at #189. Also algorythem metric has LU at 41.80 and Gate at 41.77. Home field advantage and the possibility of snow/rain showers at game time might give us the edge. Comments?

Absent a lot of snow, wind and sub zero temps, doubt mych of an edge to either squad. After all, dont forget Bethlehem aint Flotida :)
LO offense over Gate O. Gate defense over LU defense. Both teams have a title to fight for. Cant ask for much more this year for either of us. :)

I'd like to see Gate come out with the kind of energy that they brought into the game with the Rams. I'd like to se the swarming D and blitzing like we dialed up against the Rams. That was a different Raider team than I've seen all year.

Apparently the squawks can put up the points. We need to get a lead early and pound them. Apparently, they reached a feverish pitch against H.C. similar to Gate against the Rams. This is often a big game at the end of the year for both teams resulting in the championship. It's that this year, as well as redemption for mistakes and losses against tougher competition earlier in the year. Beyond the championship/playoffs, a win provides momentum into recruiting/the off-season on into next season as one of the stronger PL teams.

This is the season for Gate. They only need this one win to be champs! Lehigh has to win out! This should be a classic!

don't forget bucknell. I remember a Delaware game back in 78?? when we were blown out of the top twenty (before fcs) and missed a bowl bid.

Rich: I agree with your brief analysis of the two teams. I will rely on the old adage "defense wins championships"!

You simply cannot forget this classic only 3 years ago:

http://gocolgateraiders.com/news/2012/11/10/FB_1110123945.aspx?path=football

Colgate was the underdog on the road, and we pulled off a stunner. This is our title to lose and Lehigh will be formidable. Have said all year that we need better pass defense. If this game comes down to a fg, we may be in familiar trouble. As agile as Melville is, if he decides to run, he'd better be committed to it and bolt instead of hanging in the pocket for a sack. Still think Quazza is underutilized. Love the trio of Holland, Russell and Wilkins! Some great emerging talent in McCollum, Afriyie, Field and Diener, wow.

Statistics say a lot; need desperately to reduce the fumbles...

http://gocolgateraiders.com/cumestats.aspx?path=football&year=2015&

IMO we must score on our first possession of each half. How many 4th-and-1s will we attempt this time?!

Go 'Gate!

Biddle said the win at Lehigh in 2012 was the best of his career. Too bad McCollum is a senior and you wonder why we have not seen more of him in the past. I too think Quazza should get more use as he's a really big target. That freshman QB at Lehigh has not seen a defensive rush as effective as Colgate's. He might get rattled. Big game and the team knows it. How could they not be up for it. Go 'gate, beat Lehigh.

They will be up. So will Lehigh. Rich has it right, though I think offensively Lehigh is a little better while defensively we're quite a bit better. We'll see Saturday! Combine the football with hosting the PL soccer tournament and hockey being home & home with Cornell, does it get any better in the Chenango?

As far as stats go, Colgate is top 15 in turnovers:
http://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fcs/current/team/461

And tied for 6th in sacks allowed:

As far as getting you amped goes, here's a pretty awesome video from 2012:

Hope they attack on O and set the tone.

Different guys have stepped up each of the past few weeks. Looking forward to seeing who does this week.

Go 'gate!

Agree about Quazza. I don't understand why we don't have some simple curl patterns in the playbook? Sending Quazza just past the line, having him curl in, would make for an excellent target for Melville. Especially when we have other WRs who can clear out the middle for him. Other teams - i.e. Fordham and Lafayette - have done this effectively. Medium passes over the middle instead of long bombs, could open up the field and give the opponent more weapons to think about. Also it eats up the clock.

From lehighsports.com
Scroll for stats; like our defensive chances but not our fumbles, sacks, or fg's. Just hope Colgate comes out on top.

[> Shared Competition -- Woke Up Optimistic, 11/12/15 12:58:59pm Thu

Average (mean) point differential against shared competition this season:

Lehigh: -8.00
Colgate: -0.40

Colgate by at least a touchdown.

Is Lehigh's schedule/wins that much more impressive than Colgate's?

And with 2 Ivies in the top 25, the PL is a few notches above them? Am guessing our OOC competition is stronger, as they do play fewer games than we do.

Is the Lehigh game a MUST win? If, just if, we lose, can we beat Bucknell and still make the playoffs?

The PL AQ would come down to a vote of the ADs. If you were an AD would you vote for a 6-5 team over a 7-2 team? We MUST to win on Saturday to get in. There also is no hope for an at-large if we don't win.

AQ is our only way in to the playoffs. We win a share of the league title with one win in our last two games and get the AQ with one win and one Lehigh loss (vs us, or could still get it at 6-5 if we lose to the Brown cloud but they then lose to the Leopards. That would mean we tie for the title with Fordham but get the AQ based on head to head). Agree that we don't get in if there's a 3 way tie, AD's would (correctly) put Fordham in.

Whatever. Let's win Saturday and not worry about it!

Anyone be at the Colgate Inn before the game? Weather forecast as it now stands for tomorrow: High39,Low 33, Humidity 69%, Wind 20 mph, Precipitation likelihood 20%. Pretty good Gate weather I think.

If the weather gets really bad I'll be at the INN at half to watch on TV. It is being broadcast by Time Warner in that area.
