Anyone ever heard of Study Groups? Colgate has some of the oldest and most distinguished in the country. In essence, the sports teams' tours are a Study Group unto themselves.

There are study groups and there are study groups. And no department at Colgate upstages another or sets the agenda.

These particular trips- such as New Zealand, Italy, UK, Netherlands- all places Colgate teams have visited in the summer the past 4 years- are centered upon athletic pursuits.

There are also semester long study groups and 3 week extended study groups focusing strictly on academics with the latter type extensions of what was learned during the previous semester. They are held in January and June, after the semesters end.

As far as who pays for what, ask the relevant department.

This is a modest tweak to the new theme of 'Gate students engaging with every corner of the earth from the beautiful rural campus. GR raises a question about whether scholarship athletes are disproportionately favored when they participate on team junkets abroad compared to other groups of students ?

First, as others have pointed out, the NZ trip is probably funded by an alum whose prerogative it is to direct funding where he/she wishes.

Second, it's certainly not unprecedented for scholarship students to receive junkets abroad. That's what the Benton Scholars get....each year for 4 years.

Alumni Memorial Scholars Rx grants abroad and Club junkets, like the Debate Club's trip to the UK are other examples.

But, it may be more important to distinguish the unique experiences the reverse cultural immersion of Josie Stockill and her family has meant for her and her family, the team and our two countries.Josie carries a 3.4 as a Neuroscience major and has recently straddled representing the NZ national women's team in China while helping to lead the Raiders. Her family spends a week or two after the Holidays traveling with the Raiders and immersing themselves in Josie's life with her American teammates.

Josie's teammates have observed and participated in this reverse immersion and consider the Stockills to be as much a part of the Colgate family like their moms and dads from 'Jersey. As a High School teacher in New Zealand, Mama Stockil understands how rich this experience has been for everyone. She has been instrumental in arranging the logistics on the ground in N.Z..

Any group on campus,"should be so lucky," whether on scholarship or full-payers, to experience this type of enrichment in multiple parts of the globe while spending 4 years at Gate.
