It's a long time 'til the season begins. Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Langel and the coaches know what they are doing - contrary to what posters think.

Langel has been great at finding transfers but has proven to be a weak recruiter and poor bench coach. Worse in those two areas than Emmitt.

I'm not the first to say it, but if you want to know if Langel is the real deal, watch the last minute loss to Navy last year...that game says it all...that loss was all his. Also, look at the first 10 games of last season, his team had no synergy, no spirit, no fight...again, his fault.

Johnson,

...last minute loss to Navy...all his, his fault...

So the season and the coach are already write-offs. Do you intend to post more such comments closer to and during the season? If so, then I will be disappointed.

But otherwise, I look forward to how Coach Langel and his assistants develop the team for success. Which is what they did last season, why Langel's contract was extended, and why he has my keen support.

Go 'gate!

I agree Steve. Much too soon to write off the season. A lot of things can hapopen between now and October. Look at the FB team. They lost the first 4 games a few years ago and came back with a huge season winning the rest of their games( I believe). A team can gel and grow over the course of 5-6 months. We have to keep the faith that the coaching staff will stay ahead of any letdowns with this team.

Is 12 wins enough to justify progress?

We were 12-6 in conference play; 6-12 in 2013-2014, quite the turnaround.

One thing to remember about last year's team is that it was the most experienced team in PL history - a top six consisting of two players in their 5th year of college ball and four players in their 4th year. . This year's version will be one of the least experienced teams - especially if measured in minutes played. Langel is really going to have to earn his paycheck this year.

Bison 137 makes a very good point. We can only hope that this group has a steep learning curve.

While not as experienced as last year's team, this year's squad will be considerably older. Tillotson is a 5th year senior. Harries is back and is a 23 year old junior. Swopshire and Rivard both played considerable minutes as freshmen at much bigger programs and are now Juniors with Sophomore eligibility. This team will be smaller, but will also be deeper and more athletic than last year. I wouldn't be so quick to sleep on Langel's squad.

Yes, quite the turnaround - but having the most experienced core six in league history (and likely the oldest) was a big factor imo. Time will tell, but I think it will be a struggle for this year's team to be nearly as good as last year's. Age is not the same as experience - and anyway the average age of this year's core group will be younger than that of last year's team. Also I think you may overestimate both the experience of the transfers and also the strength of the teams that they came from.

Those two transfers may turn out to be very good players - but it is far from certain. Swopshire played sparingly (9% of total minutes) for a Bradley team that was significantly worse than the 2013-14 Colgate team (per Pomeroy, Sagarin, etc.). And Rivard played sparingly (8% of possible minutes) for a JMU team that was worse than almost every PL team - and much worse than Colgate. So they did play some minutes at bigger programs - but not better programs.

As for Harries, he has played only a small number of so-so minutes over his first two years - with injury derailing his sophomore year. Maybe he will turn into a strong player this year, but I think it's wait and see at this point - especially if he is expected to carry a lot of the load and not just be a spot-up shooter.

Time will tell. Good luck for the season (except against Bucknell)!

Bison, this is off the subject but you may have heard that Bucknell was named the #4 Party School by some magazine yesterday; maybe US News & World Report. Congrats. (..that distinction used to go to Colgate)

On that note ,PL has 3 schools on that list,LU,BU and Gate. :)

Yes, I saw that. Not sure how you differentiate between #4 or #8 or #15 though.

Vomit.

On the basketball side, Colgate was in almost every game last year--that's a big change from well, ever. The team was at its best when it was shooting the three--which is a tough thing to keep doing with a lead at the end of the game. Maybe added athleticism will help the team at the end of games but they certainly do lose a lot of gamers.

With no one over 220 on this year's team (and no upperclassmen weighing over 200) you'd have to imagine this is the lightest team in Division 1. I'm a fan of Langel and think he's done all that you could really ask of him at this stage in his Colgate career--hope he's able to keep the program moving in the right direction.
