In reply to: Andy Kerr 's message, "2015 PL fb O.O.C. Opponents" on 08/12/15 4:01:44pm Wed

One thing that is apparent to me is the up and coming scholarship schools that we were always unhappy to have played seemed to have dropped off the face of the earth for ALL of the patriot league schools. Teams like Central Conn State, Monmouth, Marist etc. Good football programs but not within the wheelhouse of our traditional rivals. Did we drop them or do they not want to play us now that we all have full scholarship teams? (except Gtown of course)

Good riddance! They did nothing to help our SOS so let the Ivy League have them. Look forward to the day when the Ivies want US to play THEM, not the other way around...and even then, we would do the traveling.

gate, you must be a recent grad. The Ivies are and will be "home and home" games/series. The FBS games are away games and generally provide a "payday" for the visiting FCS school. Both of these are unlikely to change. It's a question of "who" and "how often ?"

Let's get beyond the "Ivy-envy" syndrome. The law of supply and demand of available/desirable schools is "shaking out" and will take care of itself in the marketplace, over time. With careful guidance from the AD and football coaches, of course.

Graduated almost 25 years ago and there's no Ivy envy here or else I would have gone to one. IMO with our transition to the PL, we needed the Ivies in fb a bit more than they needed us - until now. Perhaps due to proximity, Gate would play lowly Dartmouth (proximity?!), unimpressive (rival) Cornell, and sometimes a stronger Princeton team. I got the impression that playing Harvard for a change would mean the Raiders would have to travel b/c the Crimson would not.

Would prefer only one Ivy a season and instead play more from the CAA or have another trip to South Dakota. That would be travel time and money well spent - for now. And finally, UNH and Yale coming to Kerr...gotta make it count at home. So many close calls last season at Delaware, Albany and even Yale.

Perhaps. Some Ivies still want to play us,ie Princeton,Yale.
Others only want to play a PL team they can beat,ie Harvard. Guessing Hoyas will get a lot of Ivy games :)

http://chronicle.com/article/Who-Does-Your-College-Think/134222/

There is a significant PR aspect to creating impressions of "association" in our mass culture, despite the inroads of rating services like USNWR, etc.

The link above demonstrates that there's a tendency for schools to be "aspirational" in providing peer schools to the Dept. of Education and in its institutional literature for prospective students, alumni and others.

In its 125th year, 'gate football is arguably our most visible sport for creating these "association" impressions ( to use advertising lingo ) in the public mind.

Outside of the traditional "Ivy Envy" epidemic in the Northeast that affects each institution differently, the reality is that we have little history and little similarity with Central Conn State, Monmouth, Marist, etc.

However, as the shakeout in scheduling proceeds, PL fb schools have few choices from the "Peer School" designation where the recognition is reciprocal. Obviously Colgate can't play Div. III Bowdoin, Washington and Lee, Wesleyan, and even Div I Davidson. Although these schools share a lot with Colgate institutionally, they're available for scheduling. So, we'll have to be patient with how this new environment for PL fb scheduling evolves.
