Subject: Monet's Garden at Vetheuil -- C&C welcome

Monet’s Garden at Vetheuil

The blue little boy stands
sun-dappled between bands of shaded pathway.
Shadows of sunflowers’ flaxen-headed stalks,
like fingers, entwining, hold him within their palm,
tending the master’s child in his absence.
The path cuts boldly, like Moses’ Red Sea passage,
either side, eager to spill into the vacancy,
but held erect as fortress walls, by force of nature,
standing guard.
Behind him on the path, a stairway
rises to a rented house whose mottled blue roof
creates little distraction where it transitions to sky.
On the stairs, a faded woman, his mother,
and a young girl, although he had no sister, but
the artist knows, groupings are most effective in threes,
as the trio of poplars aside the Epte, rouged by autumn sun,
beckoning the artist’s consideration.
They stand expectant, as prepared for welcoming,
contemplating the stretch of earthen pathway,
which, past the mismatched blue and white pots,
ends at the tree-lined bank of the river Seine.
Today the artist will moor his turquoise studio-boat
to a rotting stump protruding at the river’s edge,
and walk through the corridor of towering green and gold,
admiring the palette, the play of light, the effect,
stopping to scoop the little boy to his shoulders,
to lightly brush his lips across the woman’s cheek.
One might reason that he painted this scene --
strokes of light dancing among shadows,
the garden-bordered path, center-stage runway,
to pageant his homecomings;
Whispered river-breeze cues applause from the grass,
nods the brown-eyed flower heads in a bow.
The artist is home, Vetheuil is proud.
