Paul,
In answer to your questions, I wasn’t involved in the mixing and final production of Parking Karma, hence the ‘muted’ guitar (my biggest complaint is the thin tone of Paul’s acoustic, something not of Bolger’s doing)… In retrospect I should’ve been ‘all over that mix’ as I was for Bad Hair Day and Ancient Face (I accept full responsibility for Ancient Face, as I mixed that outright allowing zero interference; good or bad that recording is my baby)…
After it was ‘in the can’ I had (and still have) a difficult time listening to the ‘mix’ of Parking Karma, but it is far and away my favorite album musically… I was in a much better place spiritually and I enjoyed making that recording immensely… That work may seem a bit reserved when compared against earlier and later recordings, but at that particular time I was ‘rocked out’… Don’t forget that when Blotto was formed I had already been playing well over 25 years and was a jaded mess…
By the time Bad Hair Day rolled around our ‘live’ production went ‘through the roof’ and, as a consequence, I hadn’t picked up my instrument to practice or learn anything for better than a year (never to pick it up again in earnest it turns out)… I began to fall back into familiar musical patterns… As a result, that playing has a bit more of an edge to it… By the time we recorded Ancient Face, I was once again a jaded mess…
I still work, but my musical joy these days is poking around on the couch a bit, learning old children’s melodies and playing them for my babies… The only thing that comes close was the period that revolves around the recording of Parking Karma…
Thank you for your interest and your kind words Paul…
Peace…
